Box Score San Antonio - The defending SCAC champion
Trinity Tigers swept a two-game series with the Austin College
Kangaroos Sunday by a 15-10 victory at the Trinity Baseball
Field.
Tim Scannell, in his 13th season at the Tigers helm, became
Trinity's all-time leader in baseball head coaching wins. Coach
Scannell, who tied the late Houston Wheeler with Saturday's win
over the 'Roos, now has 378 victories under his belt. In the past
12 seasons, Coach Scannell has guided the Tigers to five SCAC
Championships and five trips to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
The Tigers improved to 4-1 and 2-0 SCAC, while the Kangaroos
dropped to 0-2 overall and in conference play. The two teams will
meet again March 19-20 at Sherman, Texas.
The unofficial "Player of the Game" on Sunday would have to be
senior catcher Kyle Felix (Woodside, Calif./Bellarmine College
Prep). Felix batted 3-4 with seven RBI, and scored one run. He
smacked a grand slam home run in the seventh inning, and prodiced
two doubles.
Trinity started the game by scoring two runs in the first inning.
Austin College had a run in the top of the third, but Felix swatted
an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning.
The 'Roos inched closer with one run in the top of the fourth.
Felix hit his second double of the game, in the fifth, to left
field. The Tigers scored six runs in the sixth inning, highlighted
by a two-RBI double from senior right fielder Kevin Jackson
(Bellevue, Wash./O'Dea).
Things became interesting as Austin College tied the score at
8-all, with six runs in the top of the seventh. Trinity's response
was to score five more runs in the stanza, keyed by Felix's
grand slam.
Trinity put two runs on the board in the eighth, and Austin College
scored two in the ninth, but not enough to make up the deficit.
Jackson batted 2-3 with two RBI and scored three runs, while
cracking a double. Senior pinch hitter/center fielder Kevin Calbick
(Burnaby, British Columbia/Burnaby South) hit 2-2 with three RBI,
while scoring two runs.
Jonathan Hall (Kenilworth, Ill./New Trier), a first-year first
baseman, batted 3-4 with three runs. Sophomore second baseman Kevin
Clements (Pacific Grove, Calif./Pacific Grove) had a 3-5 day at the
plate, and crossed the plate three times.
Senior right-hander Michael Panozzo (Houston/Clear Lake) was the
starting pitcher and took the win. Panozzo (2-0) hurled 6 1/3
innings and allowed four earned runs, eight hits, two walks, and
struck out five Kangaroo batters.
Trinity produced 15 earned runs, 17 hits, made one error, and left
10 players on base. Austin College had nine earned runs, 12 hits,
two errors, and stranded five batters.
The Tigers travel to Belton, Texas, Tuesday, for a 2 p.m. game with
Mary Hardin-Baylor.
