Fredericksburg, Va. - The 10th-ranked Trinity
Tigers men took fifth place Saturday at the ITA Division III
National Indoors with a 6-3 victory over host Mary Washington.
Trinity (2-4) won two of three doubles and four of six
singles matches. The clincher for the Tigers came at No. 2 singles,
as Bobby Cocanougher beat Kaz Murata 7-5, 7-5.
Erick DelaFuente and Max Frey won No. 2 doubles with an 8-2 victory
over Kevin Aquino and Riley Baver. Ben Carroll and Don Murray were
the winners at No 3. doubles, taking out Will Apperson and Alex
Blakhin 8-2. Mary Washington's Kaz Murata and Sam Wichlin beat
Bobby Cocanougher and Cory Kowal 9-8 (1) in No. 1 doubles.
DelaFuente captured No. 3 singles, defeating Blakhin 6-1, 6-1. Greg
Haugen continued his winning ways, by beating Riley Baver 6-2, 6-3
at No. 6 singles.
The tightly -played No. 1 singles match went to Wichlin, a 7-5,
1-6, 6-4 winner over Frey. Apperson beat Kowal 2-6, 7-6 (7), 10-8
at No. 4 singles.
Trinity's Julio Benavides won No. 6 singles, the last match on the
court, with a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Kevin Aquino.
Earlier in the day, Trinity defeated ninth-ranked North Carolina
Wesleyan 6-3 in the consolation semifinals.
The Tigers, who lost 6-3 to No. 5 California-Santa Cruz Friday,
opened the match by winning two of three doubles. DelaFuente and
Frey took out Fred Lemongo and Artisom Prostak 8-4 at No. 2
doubles. The No. 3 match went to Carroll and Murray, 8-5 winners
over Kierau Bertsch and Marcello Prata.
Frey led the charge at No. 1 singles, as the Tigers captured four
matches. The top singles match went to Frey, who defeated Rinat
Khussainov 6-2, 6-2.
Cocanougher won No. 2 singles, beating Antii Saari 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
DelaFuente emerged as the winner of No. 3 singles, defeating Alexy
Rumyantsev 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Haugen claimed a a 6-3, 7-6 (3)
victory over Lemongo at No. 6 singles.
Trinity will host junior college powerhouse Tyler JC, and Division
II member St. Mary's, next Saturday in two dual matches at Delavan
Tennis Stadium.
