Box Score Alpine, Texas -- The Trinity Tigers swept a three-game series with the Sul Ross Lobos in a 19-8 victory Sunday afternoon at Kokernot Field.
Trinity, which has won seven straight games, improved its record to 8-1. Sul Ross dropped to 2-5. Sunday's Trinity score (19 runs, all earned) was the highest output by the Tigers this season.
The Lobos took an early 1-0 lead, but that was it for Sul Ross. Trinity scored five runs in the top of the second inning, keyed by an RBI triple from sophomore first baseman Jonathan Hall (Kenilworth, Ill./New Trier).
Two home runs were the order of the day in Trinity's three-run third innng. Junior designated hitter Nick Pappas (Los Angeles/Loyola) hit a leadoff homer, his second round-tripper of the campaign. First-year second baseman Christian Muscarello (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills) homered to left field with one out.
The Tigers biggest inning was the seventh, when Trinity scored seven runs on six hits. Hall recorded his second homer of the season, as he sailed the ball to left center field, scoring three runs.
Senior right fielder Kevin Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia/Burnaby South) scored two runs in the game, bringing his career total to 100. Calbick batted 3-5 with one RBI.
Pappas went 3-5 with two RBI, and scored three runs. Hall hit 2-6 with five RBI, and two runs scored. Senior left fielder Kevin Jackson (Bellevue, Wash./O'Dea) hit 3-4 with three RBI, two runs, and three stolen bases. Dominick Robusto (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach), a senior third baseman, had a 3-4 day at the plate, with a double, an RBI, and two runs.
Junior right-hander Ben Klimesh (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) hurled 4 1/3 innings and picked up the victory. The undefeated Klimesh (3-0) allowed seven earned runs, seven hits, six walks, and fanned five batters.
First-year right-handed pitcher Matthew Tindall (Houston/Lamar) entered the game in the fifth inning. Tindall, who pitched for the final 4 1/3 innings. gave up only one earned run, two hits, no walks, and struck out four Lobos.
The Tigers exploded for 20 hits, and committed two errors. Sul Ross' runs were all earned. The Lobos scattered nine hits and made one error.
Trinity continues defense of its SCAC title with a three-game home series with Hendrix Saturday and next Sunday. Saturday's doubleheader will be played at 1 and 4 p.m., and the Sunday single game starts at 1 p.m.
