Abilene, Texas -- The Abilene Christian Wildcats, ranked No. 13
in the NCAA Division II, beat the Trinity Tigers (ranked 10th in
Division III) 9-0 Sunday afternoon in a dual match.
Trinity was originally scheduled to play in the ACU Indoors, but
the tournament was canceled because of weather conditions.
The Tigers, who opened their spring season, still gave the Wildcats
a run for the money in several matches.
In doubles, ACU'S Hans Hach and Brian Joiner beat Max Frey and
Erick DelaFuente 9-7 in the No. 1 match. Jake Hendrie and Nick Plum
were 8-5 winners over the Tigers Ben Carroll and Don Murray in the
No. 2 slot. The Wildcats John Strahl and Eldad Campbell took No. 3
doubles with an 8-4 win over Arvind Fernando and Greg Haugen.
Hach battled to a 5-7, 6-4, 10-8 win over Frey at No. 1 singles,
with a tiebreak played instead of a third set. Campbell
prevailed 4-6, 7-5, 11-9 in a three-set match with DelaFuente at
No. 2 singles, and Hendrie beat Cory Kowal 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3.
No. 4 singles went to ACU's Alfredo Desiati, a 6-0, 6-1 winner over
Julio Benavides. Strahl defeated Andrew Hoing 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5
singles, and Joiner beat Fernando 6-4,6-3 in the No. 6 match.
Trinity will play two more nationally ranked Division II teams over
the coming week, starting Thursday in Austin, Texas, with No. 15
St. Edward's at 2 p.m. The Tigers will host 28th-ranked
University of the Incarnate Word at 10:30 a.m. next Saturday at
Delavan Tennis Stadium.
