San Antonio - The fifth-ranked Washington
University (St. Louis) Bears edged the No. 11 Trinity University
Tigers men 5-4 Saturday in a dual match at Varsity Tennis
Stadium.
The match was clinched at No. 5 singles, as the Bears Kareem Farah
beat Trinity's Greg Haugen 7-6, 6-4.
Trinity (7-10) had won two of the three doubles matches, but
Washington took four of six singles to claim the dual-match
victory.
The Tigers Bobby Coacanougher and Cory Kowal won No. 1 doubles,
defeating Isaac Stein and Max Woods 8-1. Ben Carroll and Don Murray
were 8-5 winners over Gary Parizher and Adam Putterman at No. 3
doubles. Washington's Farah and Cameron Chiang took No. 2 doubles,
winning 9-8 (5) over Max Frey and Erick DelaFuente.
Frey outfought Stein to win No. 1 singles 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Trinity's
other point in the match came at No. 6 singles, as Carroll defeated
Bryan Haywood 6-2, 6-2.
Cocanougher lost a tight 6-2, 1-6. 7-6 battle to Woods at No. 2
singles. Putterman won No. 3 singles, beating Trinity's DelaFuente
6-7, 7-5, 6-3. Parizher captured No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-4 over
Kowal.
The Tigers will host sixth-ranked California-Santa Cruz at 11:30
a.m. Sunday at Varsity Tennis Stadium.
