Box Score 2 San Antonio - Trinity's baseball team swept a
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader from
Southwestern University on Saturday afternoon, winning 6-3 and
11-5.
Trinity improved to 24-8 this season with the two wins, as well
as moving to 11-5 in SCAC play. That also puts Trinity atop
the SCAC West Division standings.
Ben Klimesh (8-1) went the distance in the opening game, giving
up three runs on five hits in the seven-inning game, and striking
out nine batters. Only one of the runs allowed by Klimesh was
earned, and he allowed just one hit over the final three
innings.
Trinity took command with three runs in the second and third
innings, but Southwestern stormed back with two runs in the third
and another in the fourth to make it a 3-3 tie. The Tigers
answered right away with a run in the bottom of the fourth, then
added two insurance runs in the sixth.
Both Kyle Felix and Nick Pappas had two hits and a run in the
first game, while Kevin Jackson was also 2-2 with a walk to reach
base three times. Felix hit his 21st double of the season in
the game.
In the second game, it was Southwestern who jumped out in front,
knocking a three-run homer in the second inning to take the early
lead. The Tigers didn't waste much time getting back into the
game, though, scoring three runs on three hits in the third to tie
the game, and then adding three more runs to take control in the
fourth.
Kevin Calbick had two-RBI doubles in both the third and fourth
innings, and finished 3-5 with five RBI at the plate for
Trinity.
In the seventh, Trinity scored five runs to put the game out of
reach, highlighted by a two-run home run by Christian
Muscarello. Muscarello had three hits in the game, going 3-5
with two runs and the two RBI.
Dylan Early stole the show for the Tiger offense, though, going
4-4 with three runs and four RBI to lead the team. Early had
back-to-back RBI singles in the third and fourth innings, then
reached on a bunt single his next time up. To cap his day,
Early crushed a ball over the centerfielder's head for a two-run
triple in the seventh.
Josh Fink (1-2) picked up the win in his first start of the
season for the Tigers. Fink went six innings, giving up five
runs (four earned) on six hits, and striking out three
batters. Chris Walden and Matthew Tindall finished off the
game, giving up just two hits in the final three innings.
Trinity and Southwestern finish off the SCAC regular season
series with a single game tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. The Tigers
have already clinched the series with three wins in four games.
