Felix Breaks Home Run Record as Tigers Stage Comeback Win

Box Score

San Antonio - Trinity's baseball team staged a comeback win over Southwestern University on Sunday afternoon, and senior Kyle Felix broke the school's career home run record.

Trinity (25-8, 12-5) gave up eight runs in the first two innings, as Southwestern tried to avoid the weekend sweep in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.  The Tigers fought back with runs in each of the first seven innings to earn the victory.

Kyle Felix crushed a fifth-inning solo home run to break a four-way tie atop Trinity's record book.  Felix was tied with Doug Grigar (1996-99), Bo Edwards (1997-00), and current assistant coach J.C. Bunch (1998-01).  Bunch, who coaches third base during games, was the first to congratulate the Tiger catcher on his achievement as Felix rounded third. Felix was 2-4 with two runs in the game, and his record-breaking homer also puts him seventh in SCAC history for a career.

After a five-run first and a three-run second, Southwestern led 8-1 over the Tigers, and looked to be in control of the game.  Trinity scored three times in the bottom of the second, then took advantage of three Pirate errors in the third to add three more runs and make it a one-run game.

Trinity tied the game in the fourth, then scored two runs in each of the next three innings to pull away in the end.  The Tigers finished with 16 hits, and scored five unearned runs off of seven Southwestern errors.

In addition to Felix, five other Tiger hitters had multi-hit days at the plate.  Nick Pappas was 2-5 with two runs scored, while Christian Muscarello was 2-6 with three runs.

Kevin Jackson led all Trinity players with three hits, going 3-5 with two runs and two RBI.  Dominick Robusto reached base five times in the game, going 2-2 with two runs scored, and drawing three walks.

Dylan Early was 2-5 with two RBI, with his leadoff home run in the fifth giving Trinity its first lead of the ball game.

Michael Bentz (2-2) came on in relief in the second inning, and enjoyed his best outing of the year.  He went 7.1 innings, giving up just six hits and striking out eight batters.  Most importantly, he held Southwestern scoreless over the final seven innings, putting the offense in position to complete the comeback.

Trinity will face McMurry University in a non-conference game on Tuesday evening at 5:00 p.m.  The Tigers will be on the road this weekend, taking on Millsaps in a three-game SCAC series.
