Box Score Sewanee, Tennessee - Trinity's football
team finished off its regular season road schedule with a 48-7 win
at Sewanee: University of the South on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity reached 40 or more points for the second time this
season, improving the team's overall record to 6-3. The
Tigers finish with a 3-2 record away from home in 2012.
Even with four offensive touchdowns and a defense that allowed
just 271 yards in the game, it was the Trinity special teams that
highlighted today's victory.
Trinity returned two punt returns for touchdowns by two
different players in the game. The Tigers also had a 67-yard
punt early in the game that pinned Sewanee at their own 11 yard
line, and Garrett Biel kicked two field goals over 40 yards.
Hunter Ramsey and Matthew Kennemer both returned punts for
scores - one in each half. Ramsey struck first with his
65-yard return in the second quarter, putting Trinity ahead 17-0.
Kennemer then went "just" 50 yards for his touchdown early in
the fourth quarter.
It was the first time since 2005 that a Tiger player returned a
punt for a touchdown, which was Robert Kelner against the
University of Redlands. The last time Trinity had two punt
returns for touchdowns was 2003 against Rhodes College, with Jason
Hunt scoring both of those.
Kennemer also punted twice for Trinity, including a booming
67-yard kick after the offense stalled on its second drive of the
day. He also added 46 yards receiving and 60 yards in kickoff
returns to pile up 156 all-purpose yards in the game.
Kennemer's 67-yard punt is tied for the 10th-longest in
school history.
Biel started off the scoring with a 45-yard field goal on the
first possession of the game, then Trinity added another score
after Sewanee committed one of three turnovers on the day, driving
just 11 yards to make it 10-0.
Trinity added two more second-quarter touchdowns to take a 24-0
lead at halftime, and the Tigers never looked back. Trinity
led 41-0 before Sewanee got on the board with a 60-yard drive, but
the Tigers answered right back with their final points late in the
fourth.
Quarterback Mason Blaschke accounted for three touchdowns and
over 200 yards of total offense in the game. Blaschke rushed
13 times for 56 yards and two scores, while completing 9-15 for 163
yards and another touchdown through the air.
Patrick Granchelli led Trinity's rushing attack with 80 yards on
his 12 carries, and the Tiger team finished with more than 200
yards rushing for the second straight game. John Jackson had
72 yards receiving on just two catches to lead the team, while
Mason Lytal had 21 yards and a touchdown receiving.
Nick Darling led a stingy Trinity defense that forced three
fumbles - two recovered - and an interception in the game, and
accounted for several tackles for loss. Darling had a
team-best 13 tackles to go with his interception. Fellow
linebacker Thomas Puskarich also reached double figures with 10
tackles, as well as picking up a fumble.
Trinity will finish off the regular season next week, hosting
Austin College during Trinity Alumni Weekend. Kickoff is
scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 10.
