Box Score San Antonio - Trinity's baseball team lost for
the first time this season on Wednesday afternoon, falling in a 6-5
game against Centenary College.
Trinity (7-1) took two out of three games in the mid-week series
against the Gents, sweeping yesterday's doubleheader.
Today's game was a back-and-forth battle to the very end, but
the Tigers came up short in the ninth inning.
Trinity took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, capitalizing on one
of five Centenary errors in the game. Centenary scored twice
in the third and once in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead, before
the Tigers cut it to a one-run game with another unearned run in
the fourth.
In the bottom of the sixth, Trinity reclaimed the lead with two
runs on a pair of hits, but Centenary promptly went back on top
with a three-run seventh. Ryan Gasporra hit his second
two-run home run of the game to give the Gents the lead for
good.
Trinity scored once in the eighth, but left four runners on in
the final three innings, missing out on another dramatic victory in
the series.
Michael Bentz gave up four runs on eight hits through six-plus
innings of work, striking out four batters. Matthew Tindall
(0-1) was charged with the loss, allowing two runs on three
hits. Alex Herz closed out the final 2.2 innings, giving up
no runs on just one hit, and striking out three batters in his
season debut.
Kevin Clements led Trinity with three hits and a pair of RBI,
while Pat Hirschberg was 2-5 with two runs and two RBI for
the Tigers.
Nick Pappas was 1-2 with two runs, drawing three walks to reach
base four times in five plate appearances. Dominick Robusto
was 2-4 with one RBI, and Jonathan Hall also scored a run in the
loss.
Gasporra was 3-5 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Craig
Littleman had two doubles among three hits for the Gents.
Peyton Stover earned the win for Centenary, allowing one unearned
run in 2.2 innings of relief.
Trinity opens Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play this
weekend, taking on Hendrix College in a two-game series. The
Tigers and Warriors will play at 1:00 p.m. on both Saturday and
Sunday.
