Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 San Antonio - The Tiger baseball team swept
both games of a Sunday doubleheader with Southwestern University,
winning 5-1 in the opener, and 9-1 in the finale.
Trinity improved to 17-3 this season, including a 6-0 record in
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Southwestern
fell to 6-14 on the season, and 2-4 in the SCAC.
Ben Klimesh (7-0) earned the complete-game victory in the
opening game, striking out a career-high 15 batters. Klimesh
has struck out 13 or more hitters in four different games this
season, and is the only Tiger player ever to do so in one
year.
Klimesh gave up just one run on two hits in the game, and did
not allow a walk. His strikeout total puts him at 287 for his
career, which is third in school history. He could become the
third Trinity pitcher ever to reach 300 strikeouts in a career, and
24 more strikeouts would make him the first to record 100 or more
in two separate seasons.
Trinity opened up the day with a run in the bottom of the first,
then added two more in the third to go up 3-0. Southwestern
got on the board with two fourth-inning doubles, but the Tigers
added two insurance runs in the sixth to seal the win.
Ryan Schweers went 2-4 with two runs and one RBI, while
Christian Muscarello was 2-3 with two RBI to lead the Tiger
offense.
In game two, Ryan Lucero (5-0) pitched five shutout innings to
earn the victory, giving up just three hits, and striking out nine
batters.
The Tigers started the second game with a three-run first
inning, smashing two doubles and taking advantage of a Southwestern
error. In the fourth, Trinity blew the game open with six
runs on six hits - including two home runs.
Nick Pappas hit a grand slam - his second in three games - to
get the scoring started, then two batters later, Will Donnan
crushed a two-run shot to make it 9-0.
Southwestern got on the board with an unearned run in the ninth
inning, spoiling Trinity's bid for a shutout.
Muscarello went 5-5 with two runs and two RBI in the second
game, giving him seven hits on the day. Pappas was 1-4 with
two runs and four RBI, while Schweers was 3-5 with two runs
scored. Donnan was on base four times in the game, going 2-3
with two walks, scoring one run, and driving in three more.
Josh Fink struck out three batters in two innings of relief,
while Kyle Bogese struck out all three batters he faced in the
eighth. Michael Bentz allowed an unearned run on one hit,
striking out two batters.
Trinity resumes SCAC play next weekend, facing Austin College
for a pair of road games on Saturday and Sunday. The Tigers
return home March 24 and 25, for a three-game SCAC series against
the University of Dallas.
