Box Score San Antonio - Trinity's baseball team earned a
7-5 victory over the University of Dallas on Sunday afternoon,
sweeping the three-game weekend series, and pushing the team's
winning streak to seven games.
The Tigers improved to 22-3 overall this season, and remain in
the lead in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference West
Division with an 11-0 record in conference play.
Dallas took the early lead after the second batter of the game
hit a home run against Trinity starter Ryan Lucero.
Unfortunately for Dallas, giving up his first round-tripper of the
season gave Lucero extra motivation. He retired 19 straight
batters after that home run, and didn't allow another hit until the
eighth inning.
Lucero did give up three more runs in the eighth, but the Tigers
had built up a 7-1 lead by that time. He allowed four runs on
four hits through eight innings of work, striking out 12 batters,
and did not issue a walk. Lucero improved to 7-0 this season
with the victory.
Trinity's offense answered the early Dallas run with two runs of
its own in the bottom of the first, then added single runs in the
second, third, and fourth innings to go ahead 5-1. A two-run
sixth made it 7-1, before Dallas finally did some damage against
Lucero with the three eighth-inning runs.
The Crusaders also grabbed another run in the ninth, but Michael
Bentz came on with one out in the inning, and shut the door with
two straight strikeouts to earn his fourth save of the season.
Christian Muscarello hit his sixth home run of the season, and
his second in as many games. He finished 2-5 with one run and
two RBI, and leads the Tigers with a .392 batting average this
season.
Kelly Woodruff and Dominick Robusto also had two hits each for
Trinity. Robusto was 2-4 with one RBI, while Woodruff
finished 2-5 with two runs scored. Will Donnan was 1-2 with
one run and one RBI, and also drew two walks in the game.
Trinity will host the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on
Tuesday night, at 7:00 p.m. The Tigers will be off next
weekend, but will return for five road games the following
week.
