Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Conway, Arkansas - Trinity's baseball team won
5-4 and 10-9 to sweep a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
doubleheader from Hendrix College on Saturday, and pitcher Ben
Klimesh broke the school record for career wins.
The Tigers increased their lead in the SCAC West Division over
second-place Hendrix, improving the cushion to four full
games. Trinity now stands 28-6 overall, and 14-2 in SCAC
play.
Klimesh earned the complete-game victory in the opening game for
his 29th career win. That breaks a tie with Trinity Hall of
Famer Mickey Mahler (1971-74) for the all-time Tiger record for a
career. Klimesh is 11-1 this season, allowing four runs -
only three earned - on five hits, and striking out four
batters.
Hendrix took the early lead with an unearned run in the second
inning, but Trinity scored one in the fourth and two more in the
fifth to pull ahead 3-1. The Warriors staged a crucial
two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth, though, scoring three
runs to take a 4-3 lead in the seven-inning game.
After Trinity stranded a one-out double in the sixth, the Tigers
were down to just three outs. Trinity moved runners to second
and third in the seventh, but were down to the final out when Pat
Hirschberg delivered a two-run single that turned out to be the
game-winner.
Hendrix made a final comeback bid in the seventh, putting
runners on the corners with just one out, but a line drive double
play ended the rally, and gave the Tigers a victory.
The Warriors struck first again with a run in the first inning
of game two, but Trinity responded with five unanswered runs to go
up 5-1. Hendrix rallied in the fourth with three runs to make
it 5-4, but Trinity held off the home team throughout the game.
The Tigers added two more runs in the fifth to make it 7-4, and
after another score in the top of the seventh, Hendrix again cut
the lead to just one (8-7) with another three-run inning.
Both teams scored single runs in the eighth and ninth, and the
Tigers held on in the end.
Michael Bentz (4-1) took the win in relief in game two, though
he did allow three runs on four hits through 2.2 innings.
Zack Speer gave up a run on two hits over the final two innings,
but earned his first career save.
Kevin Francke was 3-3 with two runs and four RBI in the second
game, while Kevin Clements also contributed three of Trinity's 14
total hits. Kelly Woodruff and Dominick Robusto had two hits
each, while Robusto also drove in two runs. Nick Pappas
scored twice in Saturday's finale.
Hirschberg was 2-3 with three runs and one RBI in the second
game, which followed his two hits and two RBI in game one.
In the opener, Clements collected a pair of RBI, while Woodruff
and Christian Muscarello were both 2-3 with a run scored.
Trinity and Hendrix are scheduled to complete their regular
season series tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The Tigers
travel to Schreiner for the final road game of the regular season
on Tuesday afternoon.
