Box Score 2 Kerrville, Texas - Trinity's baseball team
swept Schreiner University 16-4 and 15-4 in a non-conference
doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.
The Tigers reached 30 wins for the third consecutive season, and
for the 11th time in 14 years under Head Coach Tim Scannell.
Trinity stands 31-6 this season, sweeping all four games against
Schreiner in 2012. The offense put forth its best two games
of the season in terms of run production.
In the opening game, Trinity hammered out 21 hits in just seven
innings, starting with a six-run second inning that proved to be
enough for the win. Schreiner inched back to 6-2 after three
innings, but the Tigers scored 10 times in the final three innings
to close out the game.
Nick Pappas and Will Donnan both went 4-4 in the game, while
both Ryan Schweers and Kevin Francke were 3-4. Donnan drove
in a team-best four RBI to go with two runs scored, and Schweers
also scored twice.
Pappas had three runs scored to lead the team, and had a double
and triple among his four hits. He was a home run shy of
hitting for the cycle in the first game.
Dominick Robusto was 2-4 with three runs and two RBI, while
Kevin Clements was 2-3 with two runs and two RBI to start the
day.
Tanner Barron (2-0) earned the victory, allowing two runs on
five hits in five innings of work. Both of Barron's runs were
unearned, and he recorded eight strikeouts in the game.
Weston Haaf finished off the opener for the Tigers, striking out
two batters in the final two innings.
The second game started off differently for both teams, as
Schreiner took a 3-1 lead after one inning. A five-run second
put Trinity back in front for good, and another five-run inning put
the Tigers up 14-3 after six.
Nick Griffith (1-0) earned his first win of the season, allowing
three runs on six hits through six innings, and striking out three
batters. After a rough first inning, Griffith pitched five
shutout innings in which he gave up just two hits.
Three different Tiger players had four hits in the second game,
led by a 4-5 performance by Pappas. He added two runs and two
RBI to his day's total, going 8-9 overall against the
Mountaineers.
Clements and Christian Muscarello also had four hits each for
Trinity. Muscarello was 4-5 with four runs scored, while
Clements was 4-6 with four RBI. Robusto had another monster
game in the finale, going 3-5 with one run and four RBI.
Schweers added two more hits and two runs scored to his day,
while Kevin Francke scored three times. Francke was 1-2 at
the plate, also reaching twice via walks.
Trinity concludes its regular season schedule with a three-game
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series against Austin
College this weekend. The Tigers have already clinched the
West Division's top seed for the season-ending SCAC Tournament,
held at USA Baseball Stadium in Millington, Tennessee.
