Tiger Baseball Swept in SCAC Doubleheader Against Austin College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

San Antonio - Trinity's baseball team lost both ends of a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Austin College on Saturday afternoon, losing 8-2 and 11-10.

Trinity fell to 31-8 on the season and 17-4 in conference play.  The Tigers have already clinched the SCAC West Division's top seed for the SCAC Tournament next weekend.

Ben Klimesh (11-2) suffered just his second loss of the season in game one, allowing eight runs on 10 hits through 5.1 innings - though just three of the runs were earned.  He did record eight strikeouts to break Trinity's career record in strikeouts, passing Trinity Hall of Famer Paul Stanley (1970-73).

With his eight strikeouts, Klimesh has also become the new SCAC single season record-holder in strikeouts, passing Rose-Hulman's Andy Cain, who had 132 strikeouts in 1999.  Klimesh now has 134 strikeouts this year to break the record.

Austin College opened the scoring with a three-run first inning, and after Trinity cut into the lead with a run in the third, the 'Roos hammered out five runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Kelly Woodruff, Nick Pappas, and Pat Hirschberg had two hits each in the game, and the rest of the Tigers had just two total hits in game one.

In the second game, it was Trinity who took the early lead, pulling ahead 3-1 after two innings of play.  In the fourth, Austin had three hits to go with two Tiger errros to plate six runs and take a 7-3 lead.

The Tigers scratched out four runs from the fifth through the seventh to tie the game, but the 'Roos answered with a four-run eighth to reclaim the lead.  Trinity scored three times in the bottom of the eighth, but the comeback fell just short.

Franklin Bay (2-1) took the game two loss, allowing three runs on three hits in 3.1 innings of relief.  Zach Speer started the game, giving up seven runs on six hits in 3.2 innings.  Only two of his seven runs allowed were earned.

Nick Griffith went 4-6 with two runs and three RBI in the game, while Pappas added two more hits and three RBI for the Tigers.  Pappas also drew three walks in the game.

Dominick Robusto was 3-5, while Woodruff had two more hits in the second game.  Kevin Clements was 2-5 with two runs and two RBI, while Kevin Francke was 2-5 with two runs scored.

Trinity and Austin will finish off their SCAC weekend series with a single game tomorrow afternoon, starting at 1:00 p.m.  The game will also be the final game of the regular season for the Tigers.
