Box Score Millington, Tennessee - The Tiger baseball team
had its 10-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament
win streak snapped in a 5-3 loss to Birmingham-Southern College on
Saturday.
Trinity falls to 34-9 on the season with the loss, which is the
first for the Tigers in the tournament since the SCAC Championship
game in 2009. Trinity stands 2-1 in this year's tournament,
and will face either Rhodes or Millsaps tonight. The winner
of tonight's game advances to face Birmingham-Southern in the SCAC
Championship tomorrow afternoon.
Birmingham jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first
inning, putting together an RBI double and a two-run homer in the
first three hitters. Trinity manufactured a run in the bottom
of the inning, with Dominick Robusto scoring on Christian
Muscarello's infield hit.
In the fifth, the Tigers scored on back-to-back doubles by Pat
Hirschberg and Kevin Francke, then brought Francke in with a
sacrifice bunt and a sac fly by Robusto to tie the game 3-3.
Birmingham put the first two runners on in the sixth, but
Trinity starter Tanner Barron got the next two hitters out on
back-to-back strikeouts. A Tiger error then allowed the
go-ahead run to score from second. The Panthers added an
insurance run in the ninth, but Trinity left three runners on base
in the final four innings, and Birmingham pulled out the win.
Barron (3-1) suffered his first loss of the seasongiving up four
runs (three earned) on five hits through six innings. Weston
Haaf made his second straight relief appearance for Trinity, giving
up a run on three hits in the final three innings.
Muscarello was 2-4 with one RBI, while Ryan Schweers also
collected two hits for the Tigers. Robusto and Francke both
had one RBI and one run scored.
Trinity will face elimination in tonight's game against either
Millsaps or Rhodes. The Tigers are attempting to become the
third team in SCAC history to win three straight SCAC
Championships.
