Trinity Snaps Two-Game Skid With Win Over Rhodes

Box Score

San Antonio - The Tiger football team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 30-22 win over Rhodes College on Saturday night.

Trinity used four plays of 40 yards to spark the offense to 493 total yards in the game, while the defense allowed just 212 total yards.  The defense allowed negative 16 yards rushing in the game, recording five sacks and 12 tackles for loss.  Offensively, the Tigers suffered three lost fumbles, leading to two of the three touchdowns scored by Rhodes in the game.

Rhodes got on the board first, scoring late in the first quarter after a Trinity fumble.  The Tiger offense answered quickly, though, going 82 yards in just two plays to tie the game 7-7.

Desmond King broke a 64-yard run to start the drive, and the junior running back wound up leading Trinity in both rushing and receiving in the game.  He scored two touchdowns in the first half - one rushing and one receiving, and the second put Trinity up 20-14 with just 1:17 left until halftime.

The third quarter saw just one score by both teams, and it came on a 25-yard field goal by Garrett Biel.  Aside from an additional three points, the field goals was also the 36th in the career of Garrett Biel, breaking a Trinity record.  The kick broke the school record for career field goals set by Todd Canion (2001-04).

Trinity scored early in the fourth to go up 30-14, but another fumble shortly after led to another Rhodes touchdown and two-point conversion.  The Tiger offense used just under five minutes of clock, but Rhodes held and forced a punt.

Just as the Rhodes offense crossed midfield, Trinity's Tomy Boboy stepped in front of a pass for an interception.   During the return, though, Boboy fumbled, and Rhodes got a new set of downs.  The Lynx got to the Trinity seven yardline, but a fourth-and-five pass fell incomplete with just 1:44 to play.

Trinity still needed a big play, though, and Mason Blaschke delivered.  He made up for a previous fumble that set up the last Rhodes touchdown, breaking off a 56-yard run on the first play of the drive, and effectively, sealing the victory.

King finished with 94 yards rushing and six catches for 65 yards receiving in the game to lead the Tigers.  Blascke had 68 yards rushing to go with 19 yards on 2-3 passing.

Nyk McKissic quietly piled up 270 yards through the air, completing 20-27 passes and throwing for one touchdown.  Hagen Kattner had four receptions for 84 yards - including a 56-yard reception in the second half.  Mason Lytal caught three passes for 51 yards, and a long pass play of 40 yards.

Boboy had 2.5 sacks and three QB hurries to go with his interception, recording seven total tackles in the game.  Christopher Hobbs led the Tigers with nine stops - including six solo tackles.

Phillip Hiner-Leamon had 1.5 sacks for 12 yards lost, while Connor Yorloff finished with seven tackles, 1.5 for loss, and a half-sack.  Von'Darrick Jones had five solo tackles (six total) and two passes defended in the game.

Trinity is off next week, then will begin a tough stretch with two road games against Birmingham-Southern College (October 13) and Centre College (October 20).  The Tigers return home to face Millsaps College on October 27.
