Tiger Football Defeats Texas Lutheran Behind Stingy Defense

Box Score

Seguin, Texas - The Trinity football team was led by an outstanding defensive effort in a 31-7 road win at Texas Lutheran University on Saturday night.

The 12th-ranked Tigers improve to 2-0 on the season with the win, which is the second straight over the Bulldogs.  The win also avenges a road loss to Texas Lutheran in 2010.

Despite being plagued by five fumbles (three lost), Trinity's offense put together three straight scoring drives in the first half to take a 17-0 lead by halftime.

Garrett Biel nailed a short field goal to open the scoring late in the first quarter, then a fake punt on the next possession led to a 39-yard TD pass from Nyk McKissic to Hagen Kattner.  McKissic then found tight end Mason Lytal for a score on the next drive.

After Texas Lutheran scored early in the third quarter, McKissic connected with Matthew Kennemer for his third touchdown pass of the day.  In the fourth, McKissic accounted for his fourth touchdown, running one in from a yard out to cap the game's scoring.

Overall, Trinity's defense allowed just 167 yards of offense in the game - including 14 rushing yards on 31 attempts.  The Tigers picked up just one turnover, but consistently held the Bulldogs in check throughout the game.  The longest drive allowed by the defense (50 yards) came in the fourth quarter, resulting in a missed field goal.

The only points allowed came after a Trinity turnover, which gave the home team possession just 34 yards away from the end zone.  In the first half, Trinity gave up just 45 yards of total offense, and forced Texas Lutheran into negative or zero yards on five of seven possessions.

McKissic finished 15-25 passing for 263 yards and three touchdowns.  Kennemer grabbed three receptions for 89 yards and a score, while Lytal finished with three catches for 55 yards and his fifth score in two games.  Kattner had 71 yards on just two receptions.

Travis Williams led the Tigers in rushing, gaining 78 yards on 13 carries for an average of 6.0 yards/rush.  Patrick Granchelli also had 73 yards rushing, and Trinity finished with a total of 185 yards on the ground.

Thomas Puskarich led the defense with 10 total tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in the game.  Defensive lineman Tomy Boboy had a monster game for the Tigers, recording 3.0 sacks and 4.0 tackles for loss among his five total tackles on the night.  Bradley Drenon, Richard Cassone, and Jonathan Alexander also combined to tally seven total sacks for the Tigers in the game.

Trinity will be back on the road next weekend, facing off against Sul Ross State University.  The Tigers return home September 22 for a showdown with fourth-ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, at 6:00 p.m.
