Box Score 2 San Antonio - Trinity baseball opened their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule with a double-header split versus Austin College, dropping the opener 4-2 but taking the nightcap 9-4.
In the first game, Austin College scored three runs, all with two outs, in the second inning off starting pitcher Tanner Barron. Barron lasted 3 2/3 innings and took his first loss of the season (2-1).
Trinity earned their first hit off 'Roos starter Marshall Korn in the 5th, a single by Jonathan Hall. Pat Hirschberg followed with a walk and the Tigers were in prime position to cut into Austin College's 4-0 lead, but Will Donnan's sharp line drive up the middle was snared by the 'Roos shortstop Mason Leech. With Donnan out on the catch, Leech fired a toss to 1st basemen Tyler Appelquist who stepped on first to double off Hirschberg before throwing back to 2nd basemen Josh Coughennower who recorded the out on Hall for a 6-3-4 triple play.
Trinity threatened again in the seventh when Kevin Francke and Christian Muscarello each singled to lead off the inning. Both batters scored in the inning, but Austin College reliever Todd Takabuki came in and shut the door on the Tiger rally to earn the save.
In game two, Trinity struck early, scoring three runs in the first. Muscarello started the scoring with a two-out walk, stealing second, and scoring on a Jonathan Hall single to left field. Pat Hirschberg drove in Hall and himself with a home run to left.
Trinity added two more in the third when Hall drove in Carter McEachern and then scored when Hirschberg tripled to center.
Trinity starting pitcher Matt Abrahams limited the 'Roos to three runs, one earned, in 3 2/3 innings before giving way to Carter Lauck. Lauck finished out the game allowing one run on four hits to earn the win.
Chris Bianchi drove in Donnan in the sixth, and the Tigers added two more in the seventh when Francke drove in McEachern and Muscarello scored on a Troy Gillen single.
Austin Singer's sacrifice fly scored Kevin Clements in the eighth to round out the Tigers' scoring.
Hirschberg was 3-4 in the second game, just a single shy of the cycle.
Trinity now stands at 7-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Tigers and 'Roos conclude their three-game series tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
