Box Score San Antonio - The Trinity Tiger baseball team used a four-run seventh inning to cap a 7-5 come-from-behind victory over Austin College on Sunday afternoon. The win also gave Trinity the three-game series win (2-1) to open conference play.
Austin College jumped out early with two runs on Trinity starter Ryan Lucero in the first inning. Trinity countered with a run of their own via a Pat Hirschberg groundout that scored Carter McEachern. Austin College added another run in the second when Tyler Appelquist singled up the middle, but the Tigers gained that run back when Jeremy Wolf led off with a double and was batted around to home in the bottom half of the inning. Wolf finished the day 3-3 with three doubles.
Hirschberg added another RBI via a solo home run in the sixth to cut the lead to 4-3. Lucero pitched through six before giving way to Colin Serkowski who issued a walk and allowed a single to open the seventh. Michael Bentz relieved Serkowski and hit the first batter he faced to load the bases. After a sac fly gave the 'Roos a 5-3 lead, Bentz served up a a routine 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.
The double play seemed to give the Tigers a bit of momentum after the seventh-inning stretch. Connor Moore lead off by being hit by a pitch, McEachern followed with a single to left, and then the pair stole third and second, respectively. Kevin Francke drove in Moore with a sac fly to center and McEachern scored as well on the play when the relay throw found the Tiger dugout. Christian Muscarello doubled to left, stole third, and then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Moments later, Hirschberg belted his second home run of the game to give the Tigers an insurance run.
Bentz issued a walk to open the eighth, but settled in to retire the next six batters to earn second victory of the season.
The Tigers now stand 8-2, 2-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play, and return to the diamond this Tuesday in Kerrville when they take on Schreiner University in non-conference play.
