Trinity Men's Tennis Defeats Gustavus in 2013 Home Opener

San Antonio - The Tiger men's tennis team opened up its home schedule with a 7-2 win over Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday evening.

Trinity improved to 3-2 on the season, and are now 2-0 against Division III opponents this spring.  The day began with a tribute to the "Father of Trinity Tennis" Clarence Mabry, who passed away on January 26.  The Tigers wore black socks in memory of Coach Mabry, and both the men's and women's teams will wear commemorative patches the rest of the season.

Despite falling 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, Trinity was able to rally for a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.  Nicolas Moreno and Aaron Skinner teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 2, while Greg Haugen and Connor Dunn scored a narrow 8-6 win at the third position.

In singles, Moreno and Skinner both secured straight-set wins, while Erick DelaFuente rallied to win 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot.  Haugen also won in straight sets, as did Charlie Curtis (6-3, 6-1) at No. 6 singles.  Jordan Mayer lost 6-7, 6-1, 8-10 in his singles match, and was teamed up with DelaFuente at No. 1 doubles for the Tigers.

Trinity will resume play tomorrow at Division II St. Edward's University, then will return home February 16 to face both Tyler Junior College and Laredo Community College.
