Box Score 2 Irving, Texas - Trinity's seventh-ranked
baseball team swept a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
doubleheader at the University of Dallas on Saturday afternoon,
winning 3-1 and 10-2.
The Tigers scored a run in each of the first three innings to
start the doubleheader, taking a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom
of the third. Dallas took advantage of a leadoff hit and a
pair of stolen bases to scratch a run across to get on the
scoreboard, marking the first time in three starts that Trinity
lefthander Ryan Lucero has allowed a run.
Lucero improved to 5-0 on the season with the complete-game
victory, allowing just one run on four hits through seven innings.
He also recorded his 200th career strikeout with four in
today's game, and did not issue a base on balls. Lucero is
the 11th Tiger pitcher ever to reach the milestone.
Will Donnan had a pair of hits and two RBI to pace the Tiger
offense, while Christian Muscarello scored two runs. Kelly
Woodruff also had two hits, while Kevin Clements hit a solo home
run, going 1-3 in the game.
In game two, Trinity's offense hammered out 13 hits on its way
to 10 total runs. That proved to be plenty for first-year
starter Andrew Alig, who improved to 2-1 on the season. Alig
scattered seven hits over seven innings, giving up two runs and
striking out eight batters.
Trinity opened with a three-run first inning to take the early
advantage, then added two more in the third to go up 5-1 at the
time. Dallas got its second run in the bottom of the third,
but would not score again. The Tigers added a run in the
fifth, then two each in the seventh and eighth to finish off the
scoring.
Jonathan Hall went 3-5 with four RBI to lead the way for the
Tigers, while Muscarello scored three more runs in game two.
Four other players had two hits each, including Ryan
Schweers, Kevin Francke, and Pat Hirschberg. Donnan also had
two more hits and drove in another run to give him three RBI on the
day.
Hirschberg also drove in two runs, while Schweers and Francke
joined Hirschberg in scoring two runs each for the Tigers. In
game one, Hirschberg had a 12-game hitting streak snapped with an
0-2 performance at the plate.
Trinity and Dallas will conclude the three-game weekend series
with a game tomorrow afternoon, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The
Tigers return home on Tuesday against the University of Mary
Hardin-Baylor, opening a nine-game home stand.
