Box Score Wheaton, Illinois - The second-ranked
Tiger men's soccer team earned a bit of redemption with a 2-1
victory over No. 7 Loras College on Friday night, avenging last
year's loss in the quarterfinals.
The game was eerily similar to last year's meeting between the
two teams, only with the roles reversed. Last season, Loras
fell behind in the first half, only to rally with two second-half
goals to oust Trinity from the tournament. Tonight's game saw
Loras take the lead in the opening period, then the Tigers scored a
pair of goals early in the second to take control of the game.
Zacharias Edholm netted the equalizer just 2:26 after the
halftime break, then assisted on the eventual game-winner, scored
by Goncalo Santana in the 60th minute. Edholm scored the
tying goal after stealing the ball from a Loras defender inside the
18-yard box, then curling a shot into the right corner of the
net.
Santana's goal came just minutes later to put Trinity on top for
good, as he benefitted from a nice pass across the face of the goal
from Edholm. It marked the fifth goal of the campaign for
Santana, and the second game-winner.
The real story of the game may have been Tiger goalkeeper Matt
Cardone, though, as the four-year starter recorded a pair of
crucial saves in the final minutes. Cardone finished with
five saves in the game, and three of those came in the second
half.
Trinity extended its winning streak to 21 consecutive games,
improving to 24-1-0 on the season. The 24 victories ties the
program record for wins, which was originally set during the 2003
season in which the team finished 24-0-0, and won the NCAA Division
III Championship.
The Tigers advance to tomorrow's NCAA Quarterfinals against
hosting Wheaton College, at 5:00 p.m. The winner advances to
the NCAA Semifinals in Kansas City, Missouri, on December 5.
The Championship game is set for the following day.
