Box Score San Antonio - Trinity's top-ranked
baseball team was able to rally twice in its last at-bat to pull
off a narrow 5-4 extra-inning win over the University of Mary
Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday night.
The Tigers extended their winning streak to 15 games with the
victory, improving the team's overall record to 19-1. The
Crusaders fell to 13-3 with the loss.
Mary Hardin-Baylor scored twice in the ninth with a two-run
double off the wall to take a 3-2 lead over Trinity, but the Tigers
forced extra innings with an Austin Singer sacrifice fly in the
bottom of the inning.
Both teams left runners on in the 10th, and after a 1-2-3 11th
for UMHB, the Tigers left the potential winning run at second in
the bottom of that inning.
In the 12th, the Crusaders took advantage of three Trinity
errors to score the go-ahead run with just one out. The run
scored on a play at the plate that was dropped after Tiger catcher
Chris Bianchi looked to have tagged out the runner to keep the game
tied.
Leading off the bottom of the 12th, Bianchi got redemption for
his miscue by driving an 0-1 pitch over the fence in left field to
tie the game at 4-4. The Tigers then got a single from
leadoff hitter Connor Moore, and after a sacrifice bunt and a wild
pitch, Trinity had the winning run at third with just one out.
The Crusaders elected to walk the next two batters intentionally
to load the bases and set up a force play at every base. Mary
Hardin-Baylor got the ground ball they wanted, but a throwing error
to the plate allowed Moore to score the winning run to score for
the Tigers.
Moore was 2-4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases in the
game, while Christian Muscarello drove in two runs for the Tigers.
Jeremy Wolf and Drew Butler each had two hits, going 2-4 at
the plate.
Bianchi's home run was his third of the season, and was his only
hit of the ball game.
Nick Griffith earned his first win of the season by finishing
off the final two outs of the 12th inning for Trinity. Though
he gave up two hits to start his night, he struck out the final two
batters to keep it a one-run game, setting up Bianchi's game-tying
shot.
Kyle Bogese gave up one run on three hits through 6.1 innings to
start the game for the Tigers, striking out six batters, but did
not factor in the decision.
Trinity returns to action with a Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference doubleheader against the University of Dallas on
Saturday afternoon.
