Box Score Sherman, Texas -- The third-ranked Trinity Tigers
baseball team opened defense of its Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference Championship with a 9-1 victory over the Austin College
Kangaroos Saturday at Baker Field.
A doubleheader was originally
scheduled, but a single game was played because of inclement
weather. The two teams will wrap up the weekend series on Sunday
with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
Trinity (13-1) won its ninth straight game,
while Austin College dropped to 2-10 on the season.
First baseman Nick Jewett opened the scoring in
the game with a solo home run, his first of the season, in the
second inning. The Tigers blasted open the game with a five-run
sixth inning, anchored by an RBI single by shortstop Christian
Muscarello. Outfielder Jeremy Wolf cracked an RBI double, and RBI
were also credited to outfielders Pat Hirschberg and Austin Singer,
along with designated hitter Drew Butler in the inning.
Muscarello batted 3-4 with an RBI, with a double
and three runs scored. Hirschberg hit 2-4 with two RBI and two
runs, while Singer went 2-4 with an RBI.
Pitcher Ryan Gray (2-0) hurled for eight innings
and struck out 14 Kangaroo batters. Gray allowed only two hits -
the total for Austin College in the game - four walks, and one
earned run.
By contrast, the Tigers belted out 13 hits in
the game and scored five earned runs.
