San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers men's tennis team has received a first-round bye and will open the NCAA Division III Championship at a regional on Saturday at St. Peter, Minnesota.

Trinity Head Coach Russell McMindes will lead the 22-6 Tigers to their fifth consecutive berth in the NCAA postseason event. First up for the Tigers will be the winner of Grinnell College (31-5) and Wisconsin Lutheran College (10-2), who meet on Friday .

Host Gustavus Adolphus College (28-5) takes on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (20-7) on Saturday. The first and second-round winners play in Sunday's third round. Starting  times will be announced later in the week.

The regional winners move on to the final eight, to be held May 19-21 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center at Claremont, California. The NCAA singles and doubles tournaments are  slated for May 22-24 at Claremont, with the participants to be announced Wednesday.

Trinity earned an automatic bid on April 27 to the 44-team NCAA Championship by capturing its fifth straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title. The Tigers shut out Texas Lutheran University 5-0 at the Butch Newman Tennis Center, to win a SCAC-record 19th SCAC Championship.

The 2014 NCAA Championship will mark the 21st year the Tigers have competed for the top prize. A major highlight occurred in 2000 when both the Trinity men's and women's teams won the NCAA Championships.

Last year, Trinity defeated Ohio Northern University 5-0 and then beat Gustavus Adolphus 5-1 in the regional event at Elkhorn, Wisconsin. Eventual champion Williams College beat Trinity 5-1 in the NCAA quarterfinals at Kalamazoo, Michigan.
