Sumter, South Carolina - The Trinity men's tennis doubles team of Adam Krull and Matt Tyer gave it a run, but came up short Saturday in the “Super Bowl” of the USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships.
Krull and Tyer, the Division III national champions, were outlasted 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 by the DII champs Jui Mao and Ofir Ginat of Concordia (NY) College at the Palmetto Tennis Center. The “Super Bowl” consists of the singles and doubles champions from Divisions II, III, the NAIA and JUCO who compete for the overall titles.
But Krull and Tyer made their mark for Trinity on Friday, after capturing the DIII doubles crown. The Tiger tandem defeated Eric Roddy and Jack Gray of Sewanee: The University of the South (TN) 6-1, 6-1 in the final. Trinity has now won back-to-back national doubles championships. Head Coach Russell McMindes has mentored his Tigers to three national doubles championships, and a singles title. Since 1997, Trinity's men and women have won 12 ITA National Singles and Doubles Championships.
