Box Score Tyler, Texas - Trinity's 16th-ranked
baseball team lost its second consecutive game to finish off a
weekend of action away from home on Sunday, falling 4-2 against the
University of Texas-Tyler.
With the loss, the Tigers settle for a regular season split
against the Patriots, following Trinity's 9-7 win in San Antonio to
open the 2015 campaign. Trinity is now 4-2 following today's
defeat, while Tyler evens its season record to 3-3.
The Patriots opened the scoring in the bottom of the third
inning, plating a pair of runs on two hits and a passed ball.
Texas-Tyler then went up 4-0 with two more runs in the fifth,
scoring after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and then
again on a bases-loaded walk.
The Tigers left the bases loaded in the fourth, as well as
stranding two more in the fifth. All told, Trinity left 10
runners on base in the game.
Trinity finally got on the board in the top of the sixth, taking
advantage of a leadoff double by Drew Butler. T.J. Garhart
drove Butler in on a fielder's choice to pick up the first of his
two RBI on the day. His second RBI came in the eighth, as
Trinity cut the lead to 4-2, but that would be the end of the day's
scoring for both teams.
Brendan Meyer (0-1) was charged with the loss, allowing four
runs on four hits over the first four innings. Trent Rape was
solid in relief for the Tigers, throwing four shutout innings to
cool off the Texas-Tyler offense. Rape gave up just one hit,
and struck out five batters.
Colin Serkowski picked up three hits to lead Trinity, while
Butler and Carter MacEachern both finished 2-4 in the game.
Butler's double in the sixth was the only extra-base hit of
the game for either team.
Trinity returns home this weekend, opening up a three-game
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series with the University
of Dallas on Saturday. The teams play a doubleheader starting
at 1:00 p.m. The series finale will be Sunday afternoon, and
will also be a 1:00 p.m. start.
