Box Score 2 San Antonio - Trinity's baseball team
opened a three-game weekend series by sweeping both games of a
Saturday doubleheader against the University of Dallas, winning 6-5
and 7-3.
The day opened in dramatic fashion, as the Tigers scored twice
in the bottom of the ninth to steal the narrow win. The
second game saw Trinity take a 3-0 lead after the first inning, and
the Tigers never trailed in the finale.
The Tigers improved to 6-2 on the season with the two wins,
while Dallas fell to 4-5 overall. The opening win today also
snapped a two-game losing streak for Trinity.
In game one, Trinity actually scored in each of the first three
innings to take a 4-1 advantage, but the Crusaders added runs in
the fourth and seventh to get to within one. In the ninth,
Dallas appeared to pull off the unlikely comeback, plating a pair
of runs on two hits and a Tiger error.
In the bottom of the inning, Austin Singer opened Trinity's
rally with a leadoff single and a stolen base. Connor Moore,
seeing his first action of the season, promptly doubled home the
tying run. Moore then scored the game-winning run on a Dallas
miscue. The Crusaders attempted to pic Moore off of second,
but the errant throw allowed Moore to come all the way around to
win it for the Tigers.
Moore finished 3-4 with two runs and one RBI in his 2015 debut,
leading the Trinity offensive attack. Jose Santos also had a
pair of hits, but no other Tiger player had more than one.
Moore's double was the only extra-base hit of the game for
Trinity.
Zack Speer pitched into the ninth, but was relieved after an
error put the leadoff runner aboard. Speer finished with nine
strikeouts in 8.0 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on
seven hits. Teddy Turner earned the victory, allowing a run
on two hits in the ninth.
In game two, Trinity hammered out three runs on four hits, with
Jeremy Wolf and Drew Butler both driving in runs. Dallas did
cut the lead to 3-2 with single runs in the fourth and sixth, but
the Tigers scored twice in both the sixth and seventh to pull
away.
Brody Fehmel cracked a two-run homer in the sixth, while Butler
drove in another run in the seventh for the Tigers. Fehmel
finished 2-3 on the day, while Wolf and Carter McEachern had two
hits each. Colin Serkowski scored a pair of runs, drawing
three walks and going 1-1 at the plate.
Trent Rape earned the Trinity victory, yielding three runs on
seven hits, and striking out eight Dallas batters. Matt
Tindall pitched the final three innings to earn the save, striking
out five without allowing a hit, and walking just one batter.
Trinity and Dallas finish off the series with a single game
tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. The Tigers will remain at home on
Tuesday, hosting the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 7:00
p.m.
