Box Score San Antonio - The 16th-ranked Tiger
baseball team opened its 2015 campaign with a 9-7 victory over the
University of Texas-Tyler on Friday afternoon.
The Tigers took an early 3-0 lead after four
innings, highlighted by a two-run single in the fourth from Austin
Singer. UT-Tyler closed the gap by scoring a run each in the
top of the fifth and sixth innings, but Trinity responded with two
runs in the seventh - starting with a run-scoring triple off the
bat of Colin Serkowski.
UT-Tyler stayed in the game on a two-run homer
in the eighth, but Drew Butler answered with a home run of his own
in the bottom of the eighth. Butler's grand slam put the
Tigers up 9-4, and it proved to be key after the Patriots plated
three more scores in the top of the ninth.
Butler went 2-4 with four RBI, picking up a
double in addition to his base-clearing homer. Singer batted
3-4 with two RBI and scored two runs. Jeremy Wolf also picked up
two RBI, and Serkowski's two hits consisted of a double and a
triple.
Right-hander Zack Speer (1-0) earned the win, in
5.1 innings of work. Speer allowed six hits, one earned run, one
walk, and fanned five Patriots. Trent Rape relieved Speer in the
sixth, and Teddy Turner was credited with the save by hurling the
final 1.2 innings.
The Tigers will host two games Saturday, starting with
George Fox (OR) University at noon, followed by a 7:00 p.m. matchup
with Whittier (CA) College.
