Box Score San Antonio - The 11th-ranked Trinity baseball team posted a six-run eighth inning to push the Tigers past Centenary College 10-4 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship opener for both teams.
Trinity improved to 13-3 overall this season, while Centenary fell to 4-7 with the loss. The Tigers never trailed in the game, though the Gents did cut the lead to 3-2 before Trinity pulled away in the end.
The Tigers opened the scoring with a three-run third, taking advantage of three hits, three walks, and a wild pitch in the inning. Centenary broke up the shutout with a two-run home run in the sixth, cutting the lead to just one heading into the latter part of the game.
After a scoreless sixth, senior Beau Attyah crushed a solo home run over the wall in left field to give Trinity an insurance run in the seventh. That set up the big scoring burst for the Tiger offense, which racked up three hits in the eighth inning - capped by Austin Singer's three-run home run over the fence in right field. Nick Jewett also hit a two-run single to left in Trinity's final offensive frame.
Centenary was able to scratch a pair of runs across in the ninth, but the Tiger lead proved to be too much in the end.
Singer finished with a huge day at the plate, going 4-5 with two runs and the three RBI. Singer's round-tripper was his fourth this season, which leads all Tiger hitters.
Zach Speer remained unbeaten with a solid outing, improving his record to 4-0 after eight innings of work. Speer allowed two runs on eight hits, striking out six batters without issuing a walk.
Jeremy Wolf reached base five times, going 2-2 with three walks. In addition to Singer and Wolf, four other Tiger players enjoyed multi-hit games, as Trinity peppered Centenary for 17 total hits in the game. Drew Butler and Carter McEachern both went 2-4 with one run and one RBI, while Connor Moore and Liam Rihela picked up two hits each.
Trinity and Centenary continue the weekend series with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
