#11 Trinity Splits SCAC Doubleheader With Centenary

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

San Antonio - The 11th-ranked Tiger baseball team split a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Centenary College on Saturday.

Trinity won the opening game 8-3, then the Tigers were edged 6-5 in the weekend series finale.  On Friday night, Trinity took a 10-4 victory to open the series.  The Tigers now stand 14-4 overall this season, while Centenary is 5-8 on the year.

After Centenary took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one, the Gents were cruising until the bottom of the fifth when the Tigers exploded for five runs.  Trinity had three hits in the inning, as well as taking advantage of two walks and a hit batter.

In the seventh, Centenary cut the lead to just one (5-4) with a two-run inning.  The Gents then added two more in the eighth to reclaim the advantage for good.  Trinity got a leadoff walk in the ninth, but a double play squashed a potential last-inning rally.

Game one saw Trinity score in five of the first six innings.  The Tigers were up 5-1 after four, and then answered a two-run sixth by Centenary with a three-run bottom half to complete the scoring for the game.

Mike Walker (3-1) took the win in the opening game for the Tigers, allowing three runs on seven hits through 6.2 innings, and striking out five.  Troy Nelson finished off the win, pitching 2.1 shutout innings, and allowing just three hits.

The game two loss was charged to Nick Griffith, who came on in the seventh inning.  Griffith allowed two runs on two hits over 1.1 innings, but just one run was earned.  Starter Trent Rape allowed four runs on four hits over 6.1 innings, but two of his runs allowed were also unearned.

In game two, Trinity had nine hits, and only Colin Serkowski had more than one, going 2-5 with a run scored.  The opening game featured a 14-hit attack from the Tiger offense, led by Drew Butler's 3-4 performance.

Nick Jewett also went 2-4 with two runs scored in the first half of the DH, while Serkowski was 2-4 with two RBI.  Connor Moore was 2-4 with two runs scored as well.

Trinity returns to the diamond on Tuesday night, hosting Concordia (TX) University on St. Patrick's Day.  The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
