Box Score 2 Seguin, Texas - The sixth-ranked Tiger baseball team split a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Texas Lutheran University on Saturday evening.
The doubleheader opened with a 6-0 win by Texas Lutheran, handing Trinity its first shutout in almost exactly two years. The Tigers were last blanked by Rockford (IL) College on March 24 of 2013. The second game featured a run-rule, as Trinity snapped its two-game slide with a 12-2 victory in seven innings. Trinity is now 15-5 overall this season, as well as 3-2 in SCAC action. The Bulldogs are 14-8 with the same 3-2 conference mark.
Trinity managed just four hits in the opening game, and three Tiger miscues cost the team four unearned runs. Trent Rape (2-1) was charged with the loss, yielding three runs on three hits in just 0.2 innings, but all three runs were unearned. Four Trinity relievers finished out the game, including Michael Maul, Teddy Turner, Pierce Pontikes, and Chris Tate.
Carter McEachern, Colin Serkowski, and Jose Santos eached picked up hits, while Sam Neely came off the bench late in the game and picked up Trinity's final hit.
Game two was the polar opposite for the Tiger team, which hammered out 12 runs on 12 hits and allowed juts two runs on four hits. Mike Walker (4-1) went the distance, striking out seven in the seven-inning complete game.
After Texas Lutheran opened the game with another multi-run inning to take a 2-0 lead, Trinity finally got on track in the third. The Tigers exploded for seven runs on six hits in the inning, then added five more in the sixth to set up the mercy rule.
Colin Serkowski led four Trinity hitters with two hits each, going 2-3 with two runs and three RBI in the win. The bottom third of the Tiger order all had multi-hit games. Austin Singer was 2-4 with two RBI, Nick Jewett went 2-3 with two RBI, and Andrew Waters capped the productive unit with two more RBI and a 2-4 performance. Singer hit his team-leading fifth home run of the campaign. Jeremy Wolf and Drew Butler scored two runs each in the game.
Trinity and Texas Lutheran will conclude the conference series with the rubber game on Monday night, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Tigers return home Tuesday, facing off against Hardin-Simmons University at 5:00 p.m.
