Tiger Baseball Edged by Southwestern to Open SCAC Weekend Series

Box Score

Georgetown, Texas - Trinity's baseball team opened up a three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend series with a 4-3 loss at Southwestern University on Friday night.

The Tigers fell to 16-7 overall with the loss, as well as dropping to 3-4 in SCAC play.  The Pirates remain unbeaten at 4-0 in conference play, and up the team's overall record to 12-9.  After Trinity tied the game in the sixth, Southwestern took the lead for good with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Trinity actually scored first with a run in the top of the second, but Southwestern was the first to really take control, hammering out three runs in the bottom of the inning to go ahead 3-1.  A two-out rally by the Tigers in the sixth was capped by a game-tying, two-run double by Scott Walters.

In the eighth, the Tigers put two runners on with just one out, but stranded two to set up Southwestern's eventual game-winning score.  The Pirates got the leadoff man aboard in the bottom half, then stole second base to set up the RBI single through the left side of the infield.

Trinity squandered numerous chances on offense, as well as a good outing from starting pitcher Trent Rape, who went the distance in the game.  Rape struck out 10 over eight innings, allowing four runs on five hits, and walking just one.  The Tigers finished with seven hits on offense, and left eight runners on base in the game.  Southwestern left just three runners on in the game.

The eighth-inning double to tie the game was the only hit of the night for Walters.  Jeremy Wolf paced the Tiger offense with two hits in the game - including a double to lead off the eighth, setting up the game-tying hit for Walters.

Trinity and Southwestern conclude the series with a Saturday doubleheader, beginning at 2:00 p.m.  The Tigers are back on the road to face the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday, March 31, then return home the next night to host Concordia University.
