Box Score 2 Georgetown, Texas - The Tiger baseball team finished off a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend series at Southwestern University with a split of Saturday's doubleheader.
Trinity lost the opening game 12-11 on a walk-off home run, then avoided a series sweep with a 13-4 win in the finale. The Tigers were also edged 4-3 in the opening game of the three-game series on Friday night. Trinity now stands 17-8 overall this season, as well as 4-5 in conference play. Southwestern suffered its first SCAC loss of the year, and is now 5-1 in league play (13-10 overall).
After Trinity scored three runs in the first inning to take the early advantage, Southwestern battled back with a pair of scores in the second to narrow the gap. The Tigers answered with a bang, scoring three runs in both the fourth and fifth to go up 9-2.
The Pirates were up to the task once again, though, plating six runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut it back to a one-run game at 9-8. Southwestern then promptly took its first lead with two more runs in the sixth to go ahead 10-9.
The Tigers continued the seesaw affair with a tying run in the seventh, and then took advantage of the seventh error of the game by Southwestern to reclaim the lead with another score in the ninth. In the bottom of the inning, the Pirates got the tying run aboard with a leadoff single, then hit the game-winning homer.
Game two was much less dramatic, as Trinity once again jumped out to an early lead. The Tigers scored six total runs in the second and third innings, and led 8-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth. Southwestern made a show that it would rally once again, scoring three runs in the bottom half, but Trinity's offense continued to roll with a four-run seventh, and a final run in the eighth.
Zack Speer improved to 5-1 with the game two victory, allowing four runs on nine hits over five innings, and striking out six batters. Ryan Gray registered the save with a standout performance to finish off the game, allowing no runs on just one hit over the final four innings.
Nick Jewett led the Tiger offense with his 4-4 performance at the plate in the second game, hitting two doubles, scoring three runs, and driving in two more. Colin Serkowski picked up three RBI, while George Haaland added two more for Trinity.
Four other Trinity players had two hits each in the game, as the team accounted for a total of 16 against the Pirates in game two. Connor Moore had two hits and two runs scored, while Jeremy Wolf was 2-5 with two RBI. Drew Butler was 2-4 with two runs scored, and Andrew Waters also picked up a pair of hits. Austin Singer was 1-2 with two RBI in the second game.
Butler also had three hits in the opening game, going 3-4 to pace the Tigers. Wolf had two hits to go with two runs and three RBI, picking up a double and a home run. Moore and Singer scored two runs each in the opening game.
Mike Walker allowed five runs on nine hits over 4.1 innings as Trinity's game one starter, and four of the five Tiger hurlers allowed runs in the first game. Michael Maul was the only one who didn't, pitching two shutout innings in which he allowed just two hits and two walks. Matt Tindall (0-1) was charged with the loss.
Trinity will be back on the road on Tuesday, March 31, facing off against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Tigers return home the next night to host Concordia (TX) University at 7:00 p.m.
