San Antonio - The 15th-ranked Trinity Tigers baseball team blasted four home runs Saturday to take the doubleheader of the weekend Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series with the Schreiner University Mountaineers.
Trinity won the opening run-rule game 12-2 in eight innings, and then prevailed 6-3 in the second half of the twinbill at the Trinity Baseball Field. The Tigers now stand at 24-10 overall, and are 9-5 in the SCAC, in third place. Schreiner dropped to 5-29 and 2-12. Last month, the Tigers swept a three-game series in Kerrville, Texas, with the Mountaineers, but the game did not count in conference standings. The two teams will finish their series at 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
Austin Singer won the “home run derby” of game 1, cracking two round-trippers. Singer hit a solo shot in the fourth inning, and a two-run homer in the seventh. He leads the Tigers with eight home runs this season, and hit 2-4 with three RBI and scored two runs in the game. Drew Butler made his mark with a two-run blaster in the third inning, and batted 2-3 with four RBI and two runs. Colin Serkowski went 2-3 at the plate and scored two of the Tigers runs. Serkowski leads the Tigers with a .385 batting average.
Matt Tindall (3-1) was the starting pitcher and claimed the victory. Tindall hurled 5 ⅔ innings, and yielded two earned runs, three hits, and did not give up a walk. He also fanned six Mountaineer players. Teddy Turner and Michael Maul were the relief pitchers in the shortened game.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in game 2 on a run scored by Connor Moore, who led off the first inning with a double. But Schreiner evened the game at 1-1 with a home run in the second inning. Serkowski and Jeremy Wolf each accounted for RBI doubles in the three-run third stanza. In Trinity's half of the fifth inning, Butler smacked his second home run of the day, and his third of the season. Butler hit 2-4 with an RBI and one run scored. He leads the team with 36 RBI, and is second in batting average, at .371. Moore went 3-4 and scored two runs.
Ryan Gray (6-0) had the starting nod and pitched six innings. Gray allowed one earned run, four hits. one walk, and struck out four batters. Zack Speer hurled the final three innings and picked up the save. Speer did not give up an earned run, while allowing only one hit, and striking out four players.
