Baseball Beats Austin College to Finish SCAC Weekend Sweep

Box Score

San Antonio - Trinity's 15th-ranked baseball team capped off a three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend sweep of Austin College with a 4-1 victory on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers wrap up their conference schedule with a 13-5 record this season, as well as an overall mark of 28-11.  Trinity will be the third seed at the SCAC Tournament, which will be hosted by Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana, next weekend.  Austin fell to 8-21 (6-12 SCAC) on the year, and was eliminated from conference tournament contention with the losses this weekend.

Zack Speer (5-2) held Austin scoreless until the sixth inning, allowing just one run on five hits over 6.1 innings, and striking out five batters for the Tigers.  Teddy Turner recorded the save after allowing one hit over the final 2.2 innings, and recording three more strikeouts.

Trinity's offense broke through for a pair of runs in the fourth inning on RBI from Nick Jewett and Austin Singer.  The 'Roos got their only run of the game in the seventh, cutting the Tiger lead in half.  In the bottom of the eighth, Trinity added a pair of insurance runs on a wild pitch and a bunt single from Singer.

Singer finished the game with three hits and the two RBI to lead Trinity.  Jewett and George Haaland had two hits each, while Carter McEachern was 1-3 with two runs scored.

Trinity honored its senior class prior to the game, including Beau Attyah, Andres Leyva, Trent Rape, Nick Griffith, Matt Tindall, and Speer.  The Tiger seniors have compiled a record of 137-42 over the last four seasons, as well as a 60-16 conference record during that time.

The Tigers will close out the regular season schedule with a home game on Tuesday night against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.  The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.  Full details on next weekend's SCAC Tournament will be released this week.
