Box Score Shreveport, Louisiana - The third-seeded Trinity baseball team scored all of its runs in the final two innings to give the Tigers 3-1 win over second seed Texas Lutheran University at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Tournament on Friday.
Jeremy Wolf crushed a solo home run to lead off the top of the ninth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie with the eventual game-winning score. Wolf was 2-4 in the game, picking up his sixth home run of the season, and boosting his team-best batting average to .390 on the year.
Texas Lutheran opened the game with a run in the bottom of the first inning, and then neither team scored again until the eighth. Trinity tied the game without getting a hit in the top half of the inning, taking full advantage of a leadoff walk. The unearned run crossed the plate as the result of a fielding error.
Drew Butler followed Wolf's round-tripper with a single in the ninth, then pinch runner Sam Neely stole second to get into scoring position. After failing to get a bunt down to move Neely over, Carter MacEachern made up for it with his RBI single to put the Tigers up 3-1 with no outs. Texas Lutheran starter Aaron Aleman was knocked from the game with MacEachern's hit, but the Bulldogs got three quick outs to escape without further damage.
The game was a classic pitcher's duel between two of the top pitchers in the SCAC this season. Trinity's Ryan Gray improved to 7-0 with the win, allowing one run on eight hits over 8.1 innings, striking out four batters. Aleman (7-3) also allowed eight hits, recording two strikeouts, and giving up three runs.
In the bottom of the ninth, Texas Lutheran quickly put pressure on Trinity with two hits among the first three batters, forcing the Tigers to go to the bullpen. Teddy Turner picked up his team-leading fourth save of the year after recording the final two outs to snuff out the Bulldog threat.
Nick Jewett reached base three times in the game, going 2-2 with a walk for the Tigers. Jewett's walk led to the game-tying run in the eighth, scored by pinch-runner Liam Rihela.
Trinity advances to take on top seed Centenary College tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. As the top seed, Centenary is also hosting the tournament, which concludes with the SCAC Championship game on Sunday afternoon. The winner between the Tigers and Gents will advance to the title game.
