Box Score Appleton, Wisconsin - Trinity baseball history was made Saturday night as the Tigers won their first-ever NCAA Division III Championship tournament game with a 9-1 victory over Salisbury (MD) University.
The Tigers improved to 38-13 and will take on either the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse or Emory (GA) University at 1:15 p.m. Sunday. The winner will play again at 7:45 tomorrow night. Salisbury was eliminated from the event and completed the season at 33-6-1. Emory beat Trinity 9-7 on Friday, as the Tigers opened their first trip to the eight-team, double-elimination championship round.
After two quiet innings to start the game, Trinity opened up the floodgates at Fox Cities Stadium with a five-run, six-hit third inning against Salisbury. Brody Fehmel started the scoring run with the first of two doubles on the day. The scoring finale in the inning came via a two-run triple to right center by Jose Santos.
Those would prove to be more than enough for Tiger starting pitcher Matt Tindall. He hurled 7.2 innings and struck out 10 batters, allowing one run on five hits without issuing a walk. Troy Nelson pitched the final 1.1 innings, yielding only one hit in the process.
Salisbury cracked a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning, but it turned out to be only run of the game for the Sea Gulls. Trinity's offense kept things rolling with four runs on four hits in the seventh inning, led by two more RBI from Santos.
Santos wrapped up the game going 2-4 with four RBI. Drew Butler and Connor Moore picked up three hits and two runs each, while Carter McEachern was 2-4 with two runs. Fehmel had two doubles to go with one run and one RBI in the game.
