Trinity Beats Colorado College and Centenary at SCAC Cross-Divisional

Kerrville, Texas - The 18th-ranked Trinity volleyball team beat #6 Colorado College 3-2, and blanked Centenary (LA) College 3-0 at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Cross-Divisional on Saturday.

 

MATCH SUMMARIES

Trinity beat Colorado College 28-30, 22-25, 25-20, 25-16, 15-12 in Saturday's second match.

The Trinity Tigers held a 21-16 lead in the first set with Colorado College, who then scored seven points in a row to take over the set 23-21. Trinity led 26-25, until Colorado tied the score at 26-all. The lead flip-flopped, but Colorado won the final two points of the set.

Once again, Trinity took charge in the second set to lead 22-19, but Colorado battled back to take the next six points to take the second set.

In the third set, the teams tied the score at 18-18. The see-saw battle continued, with Trinity prevailing with a .333 hitting percentage.

Trinity hit .415 in the fourth set, and started out with a 7-0 lead. A nine-point run late in the set brought the score to 23-8, and the Tigers finished off the lopsided win.

The Tigers held a 13-10 lead in the final set until Colorado College closed the gap to 13-12. Two kills from Kirby Smith allowed the Tigers to clinch the match and claim their second victory over Colorado College.

Earlier in the day, the Tigers defeated Centenary 25-14, 25-9, 25-20.

Trinity stormed out to a 16-8 lead in the first set, but Centenary fought back to put the score at and 18-11. The Tigers won seven of the next 10 points, finishing with a .500 hitting percentage.

The Tigers held an 8-5 advantage in the second set, and proceeded to win an incredible 13 points in a row, to lead 21-5. Trinity hit .444 in the set and led the match 2-0 going into the third set. 

Centenary started the third stanza with a 7-2 lead, and later held a 13-8 advantage. The Tigers closed the gap to within two points but the Ladies continued to fight back to lead the set 14-11. A five-point run by Trinity gave the Tigers a 16-14 lead, but Centenary tied the set at 16-all. Trinity outscored its the Ladies 9-4 to take the match.

 

NOTABLES

The Tigers improved to 20-6 overall, and 11-1 in the SCAC. Trinity beat Colorado College, then ranked third, and Centenary earlier this season on September 24 at the SCAC Cross-Divisional in Sherman, Texas.

Trinity can now claim four victories over ranked teams this season, including the pair of wins over Colorado College. The Tigers also beat Southwestern (TX) University and Elmhurst (IL) College, who were ranked #3 and #18 respectively at the time of defeat. 

 Erika Edrington posted a double-double against Colorado College, with a season-high 50 assists, while posting 18 digs. Edrington had 24 assists in the match with Centenary.

Kirby Smith hit .636 against Centenary, with 14 kills, no errors, and 22 swings. It marked her second-highest percentage of the campaign. Smith registered a double-double against Colorado College, with 24 kills and 19 digs.

Sarah Mullins posted 19 digs in the match with Colorado College, and 13 against Centenary.

Amelia Roden led the Centenary match-up with 15 digs.

Trinity's 67 kills against Colorado College set a team season-high. The .409 hitting percentage against Centenary was the second highest this season.


UP NEXT

The Tigers return to action tomorrow against Dallas at 10:00 am and Austin College at 4:00pm to close out this weekend's SCAC Cross Divisional in Kerrville. They return home next Friday, October 28th to take on Hardin-Simmons and Augsburg in their Trinity National Invitational.
