Box Score Longview, Texas - After a season-opening loss to open tournament play last night, Trinity's seventh-ranked baseball team bounced back with a 13-4 victory over LeTourneau University at the Clements Fluid Classic on Saturday evening.
The tournament is hosted by the University of Texas-Tyler, with some of the games being played at LeTourneau's Conrad-Vernon Field. The Tigers hammered out 13 hits in tonight's game, and also took advantage of six errors by the home squad.
Trinity scored 12 of its 13 runs in the first five innings, highlighted by three runs in the fourth, and five more in the fifth. Both teams brought home runs in the first inning of the game, but it was the Tiger offense that continued to pour it on. LeTourneau didn't score again until the bottom of the fifth, and Trinity was firmly in control of the game by then.
"Our guys came to play," said Head Coach Tim Scannell. "They hit the ball where it was pitched. Teddy Turner came out and set the tone by working fast and throwing both his off-speed and fast balls for strikes. Connor Moore had an excellent game, and is locked in right now. He is leading the team, just with his attitude, energy, and effort."
Teddy Turner threw 4.1 innings as the starter for the Tigers, allowing just two runs (one earned) on four hits. He struck out five batters, but also issued five walks. Taylor Hoesen (1-0) earned the win after finishing the fifth and pitching the sixth, recording three strikeouts and allowing a run on only one hit. Andrew Hoffman and Sam Neely threw two hitless innings to finish off the game, combining for three more strikeouts.
Offensively, Connor Moore and Jeremy Wolf paced Trinity's attack by reaching base four times each in the game. Both players collected two hits and two walks. Wolf scored four runs and knocked in two more, while Moore had three runs scored to go with three stolen bases.
Colin Serkowski and Jose Santos both had a pair of RBI for the Tigers, while Austin Singer picked up three hits in the game. Drew Butler also drove in two runs, while Carter McEachern scored a pair as well.
Trinity wraps up the tournament with a game against hosting UT-Tyler at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers will finish off a string of four straight road games to start the season on Tuesday at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Trinity will make its home debut on Friday, Febraury 19, hosting the University of Texas-Dallas in the first game of a three-game weekend series.
