Seventh-Ranked Tigers Sweep Saturday Doubleheader From UT-Dallas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

San Antonio - The seventh-ranked Trinity baseball team swept a Saturday doubleheader from the University of Texas-Dallas, winning 8-7 and 11-4 to complete a three-game weekend series.

The Tigers improved to 5-2 after winning all three contests over the previously-unbeaten UT-Dallas squad.  The Comets now stand 3-3 on the year, after also losing a 7-4 game to Trinity last night.

The day opened with a seven-inning game, and featured a walk-off win by the hometown Tigers.  Nick Jewett completed the two-out Trinity rally with an infield single to third base, scoring Drew Butler with the winning run.

The Comets led 6-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth, but a three-run homer by George Haaland - his first of the season - cut the lead to just one. UT-Dallas added an insurance run in the fifth, but Trinity also scored to keep pace and make it a 7-6 game heading into the final frame.

In the seventh, UT-Dallas gave up a leadoff walk, but then threw the runner out trying to steal second, and then got a groundout to the pitcher for two quick outs.  That's when Jeremy Wolf stepped to the plate, and change the game with one swing of the bat.  Wolf collected his fourth hit of the day with a game-tying home run to right-center, and keeping the Tigers alive.

After Wolf's hit, Butler and Carter MacEachern cracked back-to-back singles, and now Trinity had runners on the corners to set up Jewett's game-ending hit.

Wolf finished 4-4 with three RBI in the opening game, while Haaland also knocked in three runs.  Jewett had two hits, and Colin Serkowski scored a pair of runs.

Despite four walks over the final 2.1 innings, Andrew Hoffman (1-0) was effective in relief for Trinity.  He held UT-Dallas without a hit to close out the game, keeping the offense within striking distance for the final-inning dramatics.

Game two started off with the Tigers grabbing a two-run lead after two innings.  UT-Dallas got one back in the fourth, then scored two more in the fifth to pull ahead 3-2.  Trinity answered in a big way, scoring nine runs over the next two innings to take command of the game.

Andrew Waters had a pinch-hit two-run single in the midst of a five-run sixth, then hit a two-run homer as part of a four-run seventh for the Tigers.  Jewett also had a two-run blast in the seventh inning.

Waters finished 2-2 with four RBI to lead Trinity's offense, while Jewett had two RBI and two runs scored.  Carter McEachern was 2-5 with two runs scored, while Austin Singer and Parker Cormack also scored twice.  Wolf added two more hits to his prolific day, and Serkowski also had two hits in the second game.

Mike Walker (1-0) allowed just two earned runs (three total) on six hits over his seven innings of work, walking two batters, and striking out two.  Troy Nelson struck out the side in the ninth to complete the weekend sweep.

"UTD is a really good team," said Head Coach Tim Scannell. "They are senior-laden like we are, so you saw two teams really fight and compete. I think the difference came down to the fact we had some big home runs that gave us a lead in games, and allowed us to make some pitching changes. Baseball always runs through pitching. Unless we clean it up and pound the zone, we are going to have a long year. We have to get way better on the mound. Games are taking forever, and we are losing the tempo of the game. It seems like we are getting to a 3-2 count on every batter. The guys who had success, Nelson, Tate, and Hoffman...those guys pound the zone early and the game takes on a rhythm where we can make defensive plays. We swung the bats all weekend. I thought Wolf was huge. I thought he found his swing, and he is a great player. Without Wolf, we don't go anywhere, so I was proud of his swings."

Trinity will be back on the road Tuesday night at Concordia (TX) University in Austin, Texas.  The Tigers return home for a three-game series next weekend against Austin (TX) College.  The series begins with a Friday night game at 7:00 p.m., followed by a Saturday doubleheader that starts at 4:00 p.m.
