Box Score Austin, Texas - The seventh-ranked Tiger baseball team earned an 8-2 road win over #23 Concordia (TX) University on Tuesday night.
Trinity's fourth consecutive victory improves the team's overall record to 6-2 this season. The Tigers had previously lost the last two road meetings with the Tornados, and Concordia falls to 2-4 this year with the loss. The two teams will meet again in San Antonio on Tuesday, March 1.
The home team jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead against Tiger pitcher Troy Nelson, but the Trinity starter followed with six shutout innings during which he gave up just one hit, and Andrew Hoffman finished off the game with two scoreless innings in relief.
Trinity got on the board with a run in the top of the second, then took its first lead with a three-run fourth that was keyed by George Haaland's two-run double. The Tigers grabbed an insurance run in the fifth to make it a 5-2 ball game.
In the eighth, Connor Moore picked up his third extra-base hit of the night with a three-run homer that sealed the Tiger victory. Moore had a double, triple, and the round-tripper, finishing 3-4 with four RBI - falling just a single short of hitting for the cycle. He now leads Trinity with two triples and two home runs in the first eight games of the season.
Colin Serkowski and Drew Butler also turned in multi-hit games, while Nick Jewett drew two walks and scored three runs on the night. Haaland finished with two RBI and two runs scored.
Nelson (1-0) allowed just the two runs on three hits over seven innings, striking out a career-high 10 batters. Hoffman fanned three over the final two innings, and yielded just one hit.
"The story is Troy Nelson," said Head Coach Tim Scannell. "He just dominated. He struck out 10 and worked a super-fast tempo. He threw the breaking ball for a strike, dominated with the fast ball and got ahead. He really set the whole tone. We played clean defense and had some really timely hits. Connor Moore had a home run, triple, double, four RBI. There was a great performance by Andrew Hoffman, a freshman, who did the exact same thing as Nelson. He just came in and worked a fast tempo. He was on the attack the whole time."
Trinity returns to action this weekend, hosting Austin College for a three-game series that begins with a Friday doubleheader at 5:00 p.m. The teams finish off the weekend with Saturday's 4:00 p.m. matchup.
