Box Score 2 San Antonio - The seventh-ranked Trinity baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Austin College on Friday night, winning 12-0 and 10-4.
The Tigers are now on a six-game winning streak and improved their season record to 8-2. Austin College dropped to 6-3 after the two losses. The two teams will conclude the weekend series with a single game at 4:00 p.m. Saturday.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead right off the bat in the first inning of the opener, as Jeremy Wolf ripped a two-RBI triple. Trinity added a run in the fourth, and Andrew Waters belted his second home run of the season to put the home team ahead 4-0 after six innings. A huge eight-run eighth inning put the finishing touches on the top half of the twin bill.
Waters paced the offense, going 3-4 with four RBI, two doubles, and two runs scored. Wolf batted 2-4 with three RBI, one run scored, and his opening triple. Drew Butler and George Haaland each crossed the plate twice.
Ryan Gray (2-2) hurled for eight shutout innings and picked up the victory. Gray yielded six hits, and did not give up a walk, while fanning eight players. Sam Neely put the finishing touches on the shutout by pitching the ninth.
In game two, the Tigers again took an early 2-0 lead after scoring in each of the first two innings. Joey Pecoraro then cracked his first home run of the season in the fourth inning for a three-run advantage. Waters led off the scoring in the six-run sixth inning with his RBI triple, and Wolf pounded out a three-run double.
Waters batted 4-4 with two RBI, scored two runs, and smacked two doubles and a triple. Over the two games, Waters hit 7-8, with a home run, six RBI, four runs, four doubles, and a triple. Wolf drove in three runs in the second game, and had six on the day.
Teddy Turner (1-0) was the starter of game two and pitched for seven innings, giving up one earned run, four hits, two walks, and posting eight strikeouts.
"A great day by Ryan Gray and Teddy Turner," said Head Coach Tim Scannell. "They pitched with fast tempo again, and attacked barrels, instead of trying to be clever or cute, and the game took on a rhythm and tempo of its own. Andrew Waters was magnificent. He was smoking the ball all over the yard, hitting breaking balls, fast balls, using the whole field. Outstanding job. Overall with the team, what I was most pleased with was the defense. We have asked them to make a commitment to defend the position they are in charge of, and they have played unbelievably since we talked about it."
