Tigers Complete Weekend Sweep of Austin on Saturday

Box Score

San Antonio - The seventh-ranked Trinity baseball team swept a three-game weekend home series with Austin College by a 10-1 victory Saturday at the Trinity University Baseball Field.

The Tigers won their seventh consecutive game and improved to 9-2 on the season. The Kangaroos dropped to 6-4 after the loss. Trinity and Austin College are members of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, but the weekend results do not count in SCAC standings.  The Tigers and 'Roos will play a conference series April 23-24 at Sherman, Texas.

"The story on the weekend is that it was a great focus by our players," stated Head Coach Tim Scannell. "So often, we all see our players drift off mentally. But we had great focus all weekend. They did the simple things. They defended their position, we threw a ton of strikes on the mound, we worked fast. Offensively we hit the ball through the middle of the field to the opposite side, and came up with some big hits."

Trinity got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Austin College evened the score with a run of its own in the top of the second. Andrew Waters then smacked an RBI triple in the second inning, and Connor Moore recorded a run-scoring single. Waters opened up the game with a home run to left field in the fourth inning, his third four-bagger of the campaign. Jeremy Wolf stepped up to the plate in the fifth inning and blasted a three-run homer to right field, his second home run of the season.

Waters hit 3-4 with two RBI, and scored two runs in the process. Wolf went 2-3 at the plate, with three RBI and three runs scored. Michael Walker (2-0) pitched for six innings and took home the win. Walker gave up one earned run, four hits, two walks, and struck out four players. Andrew Hoffman, Ian Hussian, and Chris Tate each pitched for one inning to close out the game.

"In terms of that (Austin College) rally, the play on the run by Carter McEachern was huge, the bare hand," concluded Coach Scannell. "He basically stole away an infield hit, and the game changes. Mike Walker set the tone on the mound, he attacked. I thought the three relievers in Hoffman, Hussian, and Tate came in and attacked as well."

The Tigers will host 23rd-ranked Concordia University at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. Trinity beat Concordia 8-2 on February 23 in Austin, Texas.
