Box Score San Antonio - The fourth-ranked Trinity baseball team scored a convincing 11-1 victory over Concordia (TX) University Tuesday night at the Trinity University Baseball Field.
Trinity (10-2) won its eighth straight game and swept the season series with the Tornados. The Tigers were 8-2 winners over the Tornados on February 23 at Concordia's home field in Austin, Texas. Concordia dropped to 4-6 after the loss.
Jose Santos set the tone of the game with a two-run homer in the three-run first inning, his second four-bagger of the season. The Tigers added a pair of runs in the second inning, highlighted by an RBI single from Colin Serkowski. Carter McEachern drove in a run in the fourth, and then smacked an RBI double in the sixth. Trinity scored four runs in the seventh inning, taking advantage of four Concordia errors.
McEachern batted 2-4 with four RBI and a double. Connor Moore hit 2-4 with a double, and led the game by scoring four runs. Drew Butler went 2-2 at the plate, scored two runs, and accounted for two walks.
Troy Nelson (2-0) was the starting pitcher, and worked the mound for 6.1 innings. Nelson allowed only three hits and two walks, and fanned nine batters. Chris Tate, Taylor Hoesen, and Andrew Hoffman entered in relief, and allowed only two hits among them.
"The whole game runs through pitching, and Troy Nelson, for the second week in a row, came out, worked fast, attacked hitters, had command of his fast ball, slider, and that was it," said Head Coach Tim Scannell. "When you get good pitching, this team can settle in and score some runs and play good defense. There is balance to our lineup. We can start an inning from any spot in the lineup, whether it be leadoff, or eight-hole, or five-hole, you name it. Again, when you get good starting pitching, a team can just settle into the game and play with confidence."
Trinity travels to Seguin, Texas, next weekend for a three-game series with Texas Lutheran University. Friday's single game starts at 7:00 p.m., and Saturday's doubleheader gets under way at 1:00 p.m. The Tigers open a six-game homestand Tuesday, March 8, by hosting San Antonio's Our Lady of the Lake University at 7:00 p.m.
