Box Score San Antonio - The fourth-ranked Trinity baseball team rallied from an early deficit to beat DeSales (PA) University 11-2 Friday night.
After scoring 11 unanswered runs in tonight's game, the Tigers have now stand at 14-3 on the season. The Bulldogs dropped to 2-3 after the loss.
DeSales jumped on top early with a pair of runs in the top of the first, but Trinity quickly tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, and proceeded to score nine more over the next three innings to account for the final score.
Drew Butler's two-run home run in the first tied the game, and it was Connor Moore's RBI double in the second that proved to be the eventual game-winner. Nick Jewett and Jake Martin also cracked RBI doubles in the third, and the Tigers added three more runs on the board. In the four-run fourth, it was Jeremy Wolf's three-run homer - his fifth this season - that highlighted the productive inning.
Wolf batted 2-3 with three RBI, a double, and two runs scored. Jewett hit 2-3 with an RBI, a double, and scored two runs. Colin Serkowski scored two runs, and also swatted a double in the process.
After settling into the game, Trinity starter Ryan Gray (3-3) gave up just one earned run over six innings of work, striking out four batters without issuing a walk. Tiger relievers Trevor Griffin, T.J. Garhart, and Pierce Pontikes finished off the game by holding the Bulldogs hitless.
"Even though he has struggled this year, Ryan Gray is our marquee guy," said Head Coach Tim Scannell. "Obviously, he struggled out of the gate today, but we are pleased that he was really able to settle in by the third inning. At that point, he looked like the Ryan Gray of old, and I thought that was huge. Offensively, we got great swings up and down the lineup. I thought Wolf's home run was big, but so was Butler's homer to tie the game early on. It was another good game defensively, with Moore getting a bunch of assists. You are going to win baseball games when you play defense, and hit the ball like we did."
Trinity begins defense of its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship by hosting Southwestern University in a doubleheader on Saturday. The opening game starts at 1:00 p.m. The two teams will also play a single game at 2:00 p.m. Sunday.
