Box Score San Antonio - The second-ranked Tiger baseball team wrapped up a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference home weekend sweep with a 7-0 shutout victory over the University of Dallas on Sunday afternoon.
Trinity swept Saturday's doubleheader 8-0 and 5-3 to open the series. The Tigers are now 20-4 overall, and 5-1 in conference play. Dallas fell to 4-18 and 0-3.
Teddy Turner was the starting pitcher and captured the win, improving his record to 3-1 on the season. Turner pitched seven shutout innings, allowing only five total hits - the first of which did not occur until the fourth inning. Turner did not yield a walk, and struck out six Crusaders players during his duty on the mound. Gianfranco Filippini and Kevin Flores pitched the final two innings, and preserved the Tigers second shutout of the weekend series. There were no hits or walks in the last two stanzas, and Flores struck out the side to finish off the game.
"Defensively, we did a really good job," said Turner after the win. "I pounded the zone well, and everything else was just falling into place. Everyone was making plays behind me, and it was really nice to have. Offensively, we need to get there a little bit more, but they did a good job of putting up runs today when we needed to. Drew did a great job catching me today, and Coach Dave Smith was calling a great game for me too. I just executed what they were giving me."
Offensively, the Tigers scored a run in each of the first two innings, then added a run in the fifth, and produced two more in the sixth. The final two runs came via bases-loaded walks in the seventh.
Jeremy Wolf batted 2-3 with two doubles and two RBI, and leads the team with 15 doubles and 30 RBI this season. Andrew Waters also went 2-3 at the plate, while Drew Butler chalked up two RBI.
"I have said many times, the whole game runs through pitching," Head Coach Tim Scannell concluded. "Right now, we have a senior pitcher in Teddy Turner, who is working with tempo, throwing the ball down in the zone, and able to throw his curve ball and slider for strikes. He was outstanding today. Offensively, I don't think we are pleased with the swings we are putting on the ball, but we did just enough today to score some runs. This week, we have to learn to shorten our swings, and start trying to hit the ball hard on the ground. Otherwise, we are going to be in for a long end of the year."
The Tigers will play eight road games over the next three weeks, beginning with a three-game SCAC series with Centenary College next Friday and Saturday at Shreveport, Louisiana. Trinity returns home April 8-9 to host Texas Lutheran University in three conference matchups.
