#1 Tiger Baseball Swipes SCAC Doubleheader From #12 Centenary

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Shreveport, Louisiana - The top-ranked Trinity baseball team capped off a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend with a doubleheader and series sweep of #12 Centenary College Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers won Saturday's opening game of the doubleheader 13-3, which was halted after seven innings by a run rule. Trinity then stormed ahead to take game two 11-4. The Tigers also won Friday night's game by the score of 11-4. Riding a seven-game win streak, Trinity stands at  23-4 overall, and 8-1 in conference play. The Gents dropped to 17-6 and 6-3 after the weekend losses.

"There was tremendous mental toughness, and mental focus by our whole ballclub," Head Coach Tim Scannell revealed. "We came up here knowing that Centenary was incredibly well-coached, and had a great ballclub. We just answered the bell in every manner: offense, defense, pitching. Today, Teddy Turner in the second game really set the tone, with pounding the zone, fastball, slider, curveball. We had some huge hits to break open the game. In game one, Kevin Flores started, and he set the tone for the first three innings, with pretty much dominant pitching. We had huge offensive days from Wolf, Waters, Santos, and Jewett. That was the difference in game one."

Game one started off quietly enough, until Trinity put two runs on the board in the second inning. Then, the Tigers home run derby began, as Trinity players produced five round-trippers in the game. Jeremy Wolf fired up two home runs in the matchup, starting with a three-run homer in the third inning. Wolf hit his eighth home run of the campaign, a solo shot in the fifth inning. Jose Santos now has three home runs in his column, as he combined with Wolf to post back-to-back homers in the third. Nick Jewett and Andrew Waters each hit a home run in the fifth inning. Jewett chalked up his second of the season, and Waters blasted his fifth, which scored two runs. Waters also hit a homer in Friday's opening game.

Wolf batted 4-5 with four RBI, along with picking up a double. Santos went 3-3 in the batter's box, with two RBI, and Jewett hit 2-3. Brody Fehmel also was a 2-3 batter for the Tigers.

Kevin Flores was the starting pitcher, and had mound duty for three innings. He yielded only four hits in the game. Michael Walker pitched the final four innings, and earned the victory. He is undefeated with a 4-0 record. Walker gave up two earned runs, six hits, no walks, and fanned four batters.

The Gents took an early 1-0 lead in game two after the first inning. The Tigers sparked up and produced three runs in the second, highlighted by an RBI double from Jewett. The Tigers added four more in the fourht, as Carter McEachern pounded a two-RBI double to left-center field. Centenary added one run in the fifth, but Trinity countered with two in the sixth. Fehmel set the tone with his RBI triple. Each team scored a run in the seventh inning, and the final RBI came from Wolf in the eighth, by a single.

McEachern batted 2-4 with two RBI, two doubles, and three runs. Wolf also scored three runs, while going 2-3 at the plate. He batted 6-8 on the day, and drove in five runs, while scoring five. Jewett hit 2-3 in game two, along with three RBI. In the doubleheader, he batted 4-6, with four RBI.

Teddy Turner was the starting pitcher, and worked for six innings, as well as picking up the win. Turner (4-1) gave up two earned runs, three hits, only one walk, and struck out four players. Chris Tate took over for two innings, and permitted one walk. Ryan Gray finished up and retired the side in the ninth.

The Tigers continue their SCAC campaign next weekend, at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas. Saturday's doubleheader starts at noon, and the single game the next day gets under way at 2:00 p.m.
