Box Score Seguin, Texas - The fourth-ranked Trinity baseball team lost 8-5 in the opening game of a weekend series at Texas Lutheran University on Friday night.
The Tigers had an eight-game winning streak snapped with the loss, and now stand at 10-3 on the season. The Bulldogs improved to 7-5 in the non-conference matchup. The series concludes with a doubleheader Saturday, with the first game scheduled to get under way at 1:00 p.m. The teams meet again later in the year for Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action - a three-game series in San Antonio.
The Bulldogs rallied twice to pull away for the win at the end. After taking a 4-1 lead after four innings of play, the Tigers gave up seven runs over the final four innings. Texas Lutheran tied the game with a three-run fifth, and after Trinity went back in front with a run in the sixth, the home team scored twice in the seventh to take the lead for good at 6-5. Texas Lutheran added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth as well. The Tigers loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth to put the tying run aboard, but the Bulldogs were able to hang on for the victory.
"It was not a well-played baseball game," admitted Head Coach Tim Scannell. "We never commanded the ball on the mound. We ended up walking eight batters. Anytime you walk eight batters in a baseball game, that's pretty much going to equal a loss. We will look at tomorrow as a new day, and see if we can come with a big fight, and try and take two ball games."
Nick Jewett was 3-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, hitting a double and a triple to lead a Tiger offense that finished with 12 total hits in the game. Jose Santos was 2-4 with two runs scored, while both Carter McEachern and Jake Martin also had two hits each.
Ryan Gray (2-3) took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits over 6.1 innings, walking five, and striking out three.
