Box Score 2 Seguin, Texas - The fourth-ranked Tiger baseball team swept a doubleheader from Texas Lutheran on Saturday, winning 2-1 and 11-4 to take the three-game road weekend series.
Trinity stands at 12-3 on the season and has won 10 of its last 11 games. Texas Lutheran took the series opener 8-5 Friday night, and is sporting a 7-7 record after the weekend. The two teams will play a three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series April 8-9 at the Trinity University Baseball Field.
Texas Lutheran opened the scoring with a run in the first inning of game one. The Tigers scored their two runs in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Andrew Waters, and a run-scoring single from Connor Moore.
Teddy Turner (2-0) was the starter of the first game, and picked up the win. Turner was on the mound for seven innings and yielded one earned run on six hits, issuing just two walks and fanning two batters. Troy Nelson came on board in the eighth inning, with three Bulldog runners on base. Nelson struck out the next batter, followed by forcing a pop fly in the infield, and a ground-out to end the threat. The Texas Lutheran half of the ninth inning was just as critical. A Bulldog player reached first base on an error, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then moved to third on a sacrifice. Nelson preserved the victory by fanning the next two players, to earn his first save of the season.
"TLU is an incredibly tough-minded team, and very difficult to beat," revealed Head Coach Tim Scannell. "The story was Troy Nelson coming in, in an impossible situation, and striking out some huge hitters, and keeping it at 2-1."
Nick Jewett hit 3-4 with a run scored, along with cracking a double. Colin Serkowski batted 2-4 and accounted for two doubles.
The scoring in game two began with Drew Butler's sacrifice fly in the top of the first, but Texas Lutheran scored twice in the bottom of the inning to take the lead, then added two more runs in the next two innings to take control of the game with the 4-1 lead.
In the fifth, Trinity's offense came to life for the first time all day, smashing three hits to plate four runs and take the 5-4 lead. The Tigers then exploded for six more runs in the seventh, highlighted by Jeremy Wolf's three-run homer to right - his third round-tripper of the season.
"In the second game, TLU came out with their fight and jumped out to a 4-1 lead," said Coach Scannell. "We were back on our heels, and then the bats woke up and we did an unbelievable job with two-out hitting, with runners in scoring position."
Connor Moore went 3-5 with two RBI, and scored three of the Tiger runs. Wolf hit 2-5 with three RBI, and Jake Martin batted 2-3 with two runs scored. Michael Walker (3-0) pitched for six innings and was awarded the victory. Walker gave up just three earned runs on eight hits. Jeff Lonnecker and Sean Cubley pitched the final three innings, and did not allow a run, hit, or give up any walks.
Trinity opens a six-game homestand Tuesday, by hosting San Antonio's Our Lady of the Lake University at 7:00 p.m.
